This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Before 18th February 1383 [his father] John Dynham [aged 64] was murdered by robbers including John Broun.
On 18th February 1383 John Dynham [aged 24] killed John Broun (his father's murderer) at Exeter Cathedral [Map].
On 16th March 1383 John Dynham [aged 24] was pardoned.
On 22nd September 1387 [his wife] Eleanor Montagu [aged 29] died at Hartland Quay Bideford, Devon. She was buried at Kingswear, Devon.
Before 26th November 1396 John Dynham [aged 37] and Maud Maltravers were married.
On 27th February 1398 John Dynham [aged 39] bound over to keep the peace.
Around 1402 [his wife] Maud Maltravers died.
In January 1402 John Dynham [aged 43] was found guilty of committing assaults.
In December 1404 John Dynham [aged 45] was found guilty of committing assaults.
In 1406 [his son] John Dynham was born to John Dynham [aged 47] and Philippa Lovell. He married before 12th July 1434 Joan Arches and had issue.
Before 1412 [his son-in-law] Edward Hastings 8th Baron Hastings [aged 29] and [his daughter] Muriel Dynham Baroness Hastings [aged 29] were married. They were half third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward I of England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward I of England.
Around 1412 [his daughter] Muriel Dynham Baroness Hastings [aged 30] died at Hartland, Devon.
On 25th December 1428 John Dynham [aged 69] died.
