Biography of Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave 1565-1646

Around 1562 [his father] John Sheffield 2nd Baron Sheffield (age 24) and [his mother] Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield (age 20) were married. She by marriage Baroness Sheffield of Butterwick in Lincolnshire. They were half fourth cousin once removed.

On 7th December 1565 Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave was born to [his father] John Sheffield 2nd Baron Sheffield (age 27) and [his mother] Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield (age 23).

On 10th December 1568 [his father] John Sheffield 2nd Baron Sheffield (age 30) died. His son Edmund (age 3) succeeded 3rd Baron Sheffield of Butterwick in Lincolnshire.

Before 13th November 1581 Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 15) and Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 41) were married. She by marriage Baroness Sheffield of Butterwick in Lincolnshire. The difference in their ages was 25 years; she, unusually, being older than him.

In 1588 [his daughter] Mary Sheffield was born to Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 22) and [his wife] Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 48). She married before 17th January 1612 her fourth cousin Ferdinando Fairfax 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron and had issue.

In 1589 [his son] Edmund Sheffield was born to Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 23) and [his wife] Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 49).

In 1593 [his son] Philip Sheffield was born to Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 27) and [his wife] Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 53).

On 29th November 1597 [his step-father] Edward Stafford (age 45) and [his mother] Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield (age 55) were married. They were fourth cousins.

In 1608 [his mother] Douglas Howard Baroness Sheffield (age 66) died.

Before December 1611 John Sheffield and Grizel Anderson (age 22) were married. He the son of Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 45) and Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 71).

Before 17th January 1612 [his son-in-law] Ferdinando Fairfax 2nd Lord Fairfax of Cameron (age 27) and Mary Sheffield (age 24) were married. She the daughter of Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 46) and Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 72). They were fourth cousins.

On 3rd December 1614 brothers [his son] John Sheffield, Edmund Sheffield (age 25) and Philip Sheffield (age 21) were drowned whilst attempting to cross the flooded River Ouse at the Whitgift Ferry, East Yorkshire [Map].

Diary of Anne Clifford. 15th May 1617. The 15th the Child put on her white coats and left off many things from her head, the weather growing extreme hot.

Mrs Ryder came here and told me Lord Sheffield's (age 51) wife (age 77) was lately dead since the King went from York.

Around 15th May 1617 [his wife] Ursula Tyrwhitt (age 77) died in Boston [Map]. See Diary of Anne Clifford.

On 4th March 1619 Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 53) and Mariana Irwin Countess Mulgrave were married at St Margaret's Church, Westminster [Map]. She by marriage Baroness Sheffield of Butterwick in Lincolnshire.

Diary of Anne Clifford. 4th March 1619. The 4th my Lord Sheffield (age 53) was married at Westminster in St. Margaret's Church [Map] to one [his wife] Anne Erwin, daughter of her [sic] Wilkam Erwin a Scottish man, which was held a very mean match, an undiscreet on part of him.

On 2nd June 1619 [his daughter] Mary Sheffield (age 31) died.

In 1626 Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 60) was created 1st Earl Mulgrave. [his wife] Mariana Irwin Countess Mulgrave by marriage Countess Mulgrave.

In October 1646 Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave (age 80) died. His grandson Edmund (age 34) succeeded 2nd Earl Mulgrave, 4th Baron Sheffield of Butterwick in Lincolnshire.

[his son] James Sheffield was born to Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave and Mariana Irwin Countess Mulgrave. He married before 1664 Jane Cockayne, daughter of William Cockayne and Mary Morris Countess Dover, and had issue.

[his son] John Sheffield was born to Edmund Sheffield 1st Earl Mulgrave and Ursula Tyrwhitt. He married before December 1611 Grizel Anderson and had issue.
