The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed." On 30th April 1880 [his father] Ivor Bertie Guest (age 44) was created 1st Baron Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset. [his mother] Cornelia Henrietta Maria Spencer-Churchill Baroness Wimborne (age 32) by marriage Baroness Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset.
On 24th January 1891 [his brother-in-law] George Bridges Rodney 7th Baron Rodney (age 33) and [his sister] Corisande Evelyn Vere Guest Baroness Rodney were married at St James' Church, Piccadilly. She by marriage Baroness Rodney of Rodney Stoke in Somerset.
On 8th February 1899 [his brother-in-law] Matthew White Ridley 2nd Viscount Ridley (age 24) and [his sister] Rosamond Cornelia Gwladys Guest Viscountess Ridley were married.
In 1900 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 26) was elected MP Plymouth which seat he held until 1906.
In 1900 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 26) was appointed High Sheriff of Glamorganshire.
In 1902 [his brother-in-law] George Bridges Rodney 7th Baron Rodney (age 44) and [his sister] Corisande Evelyn Vere Guest Baroness Rodney were divorced.
On 10th February 1902 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 29) and Alice Katherine Sibell Grosvenor (age 21) were married.
On 21st February 1903 [his son] Ivor Grosvenor Guest 2nd Viscount Wimborne was born to Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 30) and [his wife] Alice Katherine Sibell Grosvenor (age 22). He married 22nd November 1938 his third cousin Mabel Edith Fox-Strangways Viscountess Wimborne, daughter of Giles Fox-Strangways 6th Earl of Ilchester and Helen Vane-Tempest-Stewart Countess Ilchester, and had issue.
On 28th November 1904 Matthew White Ridley 1st Viscount Ridley (age 62) died. His son [his brother-in-law] Matthew (age 29) succeeded 2nd Viscount Ridley of Blagdon and Blyth in Northumberland, 2nd Baron Wensleydale of Blagdon and Blyth in Northumberland, 6th Baronet Ridley of Blagdon in Northumberland. [his sister] Rosamond Cornelia Gwladys Guest Viscountess Ridley by marriage Viscountess Ridley of Blagdon and Blyth in Northumberland.
In 1906 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 32) was elected MP Cardiff which seat he held until 1910.
In 1910 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 36) was appointed Paymaster-General which office he held until 1912.
On 15th March 1910 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 37) was created 1st Baron Ashby St Ledgers of Ashby St Ledgers in Northampton.
In 1913 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 39) was appointed Lord in Waiting to King George VI of the United Kingdom (age 17) which position he held until 1915.
On 22nd February 1914 [his father] Ivor Bertie Guest (age 78) died. His son Ivor (age 41) succeeded 2nd Baron Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset, 3rd Baronet Guest of Dowlais in Glamorganshire.
In 1915 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 41) was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.
On 15th June 1918 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 45) was created 1st Viscount Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset.
On 22nd January 1927 [his mother] Cornelia Henrietta Maria Spencer-Churchill Baroness Wimborne (age 79) died.
On 22nd November 1938 [his son] Ivor Grosvenor Guest 2nd Viscount Wimborne (age 35) and [his daughter-in-law] Mabel Edith Fox-Strangways Viscountess Wimborne (age 20) were married. She the daughter of Giles Fox-Strangways 6th Earl of Ilchester (age 64) and Helen Vane-Tempest-Stewart Countess Ilchester (age 62). They were third cousins.
On 14th June 1939 Ivor Churchill Guest 1st Viscount Wimborne (age 66) died. His son Ivor (age 36) succeeded 2nd Viscount Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset, 2nd Baron Ashby St Ledgers of Ashby St Ledgers in Northampton, 3rd Baron Wimborne of Canford Magna in Dorset, 4th Baronet Guest of Dowlais in Glamorganshire. On 17th April 1948 [his former wife] Alice Katherine Sibell Grosvenor (age 67) died.
