Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses
Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

Paternal Family Tree: De Cotton
On 14th November 1773 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere was born to Robert Salusbury Cotton 5th Baronet [aged 34].
On 14th August 1775 [his grandfather] Lynch Salusbury Cotton 4th Baronet [aged 70] died. His son [his father] Robert [aged 36] succeeded 5th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire.
On 1st January 1801 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 27] and Anna-Maria Clinton [aged 17] were married. She the daughter of Thomas Pelham-Clinton 3rd Duke Newcastle-under-Lyne and Anna Maria Stanhope Countess Lincoln.
On 31st May 1807 [his wife] Anna-Maria Clinton [aged 23] died.
On 24th August 1809 [his father] Robert Salusbury Cotton 5th Baronet [aged 70] died. His son Stapleton [aged 35] succeeded 6th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire.
On 11th April 1812 Major-General John Le Marchant [aged 46] led the 5th Dragoon Guards in a perfectly timed flank charge, in echelon of squadrons, which defeated two strong columns of French cavalry under General Charles Lallemand. The French had been attacking British light cavalry under Sir Stapleton Cotton [aged 38], who were being forced to give ground.
On 3rd May 1814 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 40] was created 1st Baron Combermere.
On 22nd June 1814 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 40] and Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Baroness Combermere.
In 1815 [his daughter] Caroline Stapleton-Cotton Marchioness Downshire was born to Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 41] and [his wife] Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere [aged 26]. She married 23rd August 1837 her fifth cousin once removed Arthur Hill 4th Marquess Downshire, son of Arthur Blundell Sandys Trumbull Hill 3rd Marquess Downshire and Maria Windsor Marchioness Downshire, and had issue.

On 24th November 1818 [his son] Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 2nd Viscount Combermere was born to Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 45] and [his wife] Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere [aged 29] at Duncombe House, St Thomas. He married 1844 Susan Alice Sitwell, daughter of George Sitwell 2nd Baronet, and had issue.
On 8th February 1827 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 53] was created 1st Viscount Combermere. [his wife] Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere [aged 38] by marriage Viscountess Combermere.
On 25th January 1837 [his wife] Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere [aged 48] died.
On 23rd August 1837 [his son-in-law] Arthur Hill 4th Marquess Downshire [aged 25] and [his daughter] Caroline Stapleton-Cotton Marchioness Downshire [aged 22] were married. He the son of Arthur Blundell Sandys Trumbull Hill 3rd Marquess Downshire [aged 48] and Maria Windsor Marchioness Downshire [aged 47]. They were fifth cousin once removed.
In 1838 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 64] and Mary Gibbings Viscountess Comberemere were married. She by marriage Viscountess Combermere.
In 1844 [his son] Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 2nd Viscount Combermere [aged 25] and [his daughter-in-law] Susan Alice Sitwell [aged 24] were married.
On 21st February 1865 Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere [aged 91] died. His son Wellington [aged 46] succeeded 2nd Viscount Combermere, 2nd Baron Combermere, 7th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire.

Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 2nd Viscount Combermere: On 24th November 1818 he was born to Stapleton Cotton 1st Viscount Combermere and Caroline Greville Viscountess Comberemere at Duncombe House, St Thomas. In 1844 Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 2nd Viscount Combermere and Susan Alice Sitwell were married. On 1st December 1891 Wellington Stapleton-Cotton 2nd Viscount Combermere died. His son Robert succeeded 3rd Viscount Combermere, 3rd Baron Combermere, 8th Baronet Cotton of Combermere in Cheshire. Isabel Marion Chetwynd Viscountess Combermere by marriage Viscountess Combermere.
