On 12th February 1709 [his father] James Cecil 5th Earl Salisbury [aged 17] and [his mother] Anne Tufton Countess of Salisbury were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet [aged 64] and [his grandmother] Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet [aged 44]. He the son of James Cecil 4th Earl Salisbury and Frances Bennett Countess of Salisbury [aged 38]. They were fourth cousins.
On 20th October 1713 James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury was born to James Cecil 5th Earl Salisbury [aged 22] and Anne Tufton Countess of Salisbury. He was educated at Westminster School [Map].
On 9th October 1728 [his father] James Cecil 5th Earl Salisbury [aged 37] died. His son James [aged 14] succeeded 6th Earl Salisbury.
On 15th February 1737 [his brother-in-law] John Perceval 2nd Earl Egmont [aged 25] and [his sister] Catherine Cecil Countess Egmont [aged 15] were married. She the daughter of [his father] James Cecil 5th Earl Salisbury and [his mother] Anne Tufton Countess of Salisbury. He the son of John Perceval 1st Earl Egmont [aged 53] and Catherine Parker Countess Egmont [aged 47].
Sometime before 1745 James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 31] began a relationship with Mary Grave of Baldock. He continued the relationship following his marriage.
In 1745 James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 31] and Elizabeth Keet Countess of Salisbury [aged 24] were married. She by marriage Countess Salisbury. He the son of James Cecil 5th Earl Salisbury and Anne Tufton Countess of Salisbury.
On 1st May 1748 John Perceval 1st Earl Egmont [aged 64] died. His son [his brother-in-law] John [aged 37] succeeded 2nd Earl Egmont, 2nd Viscount Perceval of Kanturk in County Cork, 2nd Baron Perceval of Burton in County Cork, 6th Baronet Perceval of Kanturk in County Cork. [his sister] Catherine Cecil Countess Egmont [aged 26] by marriage Countess Egmont.
On 4th September 1748 [his son] James Cecil 1st Marquess Salisbury was born to James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 34] and [his wife] Elizabeth Keet Countess of Salisbury [aged 27]. He married 2nd December 1773 his fifth cousin once removed Mary Amelia Hill Marchioness Salisbury, daughter of Wills Hill 1st Marquess Downshire and Margaretta Fitzgerald, and had issue.
Around 1750 James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 36] separated from his wife Elizabeth Keet Countess of Salisbury [aged 29] and lived with Mary Grave of Baldock for the remaining thirty years of his life at his house Quickswood, Clothall. Some unknown person gave him the eponym "The Wicked Earl" in consequence.
This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 22nd March 1757 [his mother] Anne Tufton Countess of Salisbury died.
On 2nd December 1773 James Cecil 1st Marquess Salisbury [aged 25] and Mary Amelia Hill Marchioness Salisbury [aged 23] were married. She the daughter of Wills Hill 1st Marquess Downshire [aged 55] and Margaretta Fitzgerald. He the son of James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 60] and Elizabeth Keet Countess of Salisbury [aged 52]. They were fifth cousin once removed.
In 1776 [his wife] Elizabeth Keet Countess of Salisbury [aged 55] died.
On 19th September 1780 James Cecil 6th Earl of Salisbury [aged 66] died. His son James [aged 32] succeeded 7th Earl Salisbury. Mary Amelia Hill Marchioness Salisbury [aged 30] by marriage Countess Salisbury. Mary Grave of Baldock received over £50,000 in his Will, besides jewellery, silver and furniture. In addition, the Earl bequeathed £43,000 to his seven children by her.
