The Chronicle of Jean le Bel, Volume 2 continues one of the most important fourteenth-century accounts of the early Hundred Years’ War. Written by the Liège chronicler Jean le Bel, this vivid narrative follows the fortunes of Edward III, Jean II of France, the Black Prince, the great nobles of France and England, and the soldiers, captains and companies who shaped the conflict. This volume covers some of the most dramatic events of the period, including the battles of Crécy and Poitiers, the siege and capture of Calais, the captivity of King John, the rise of the Jacquerie, the turmoil in Paris under Étienne Marcel and Charles of Navarre, the devastation caused by the free companies, Edward III’s great campaign of 1359–1360, and the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Brétigny. Jean le Bel’s chronicle is especially valuable for its lively detail, its interest in chivalry, warfare, politics and reputation, and its influence on later chroniclers, most famously Froissart. This English translation presents the text in clear, readable British English while preserving the force and character of the original narrative. The translation includes extensive notes to help the reader better understand Jean le Bel's text. Volume 2 also includes translated appendices drawn from royal and administrative records, many from the English Record Office, which illuminate Edward III’s campaigns in Brittany, the siege and occupation of Calais, naval preparations, military finance, appointments, safe conducts and related affairs.

Paternal Family Tree: Cholmeley of Easton
On 12th August 1874 Hugh Cholmeley 3rd Baronet [aged 34] and [his mother] Edith Sophia Rowley Lady Cholmeley [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Lady Cholmeley of Easton in Lincolnshire.
On 12th June 1876 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet was born to Hugh Cholmeley 3rd Baronet [aged 36] and Edith Sophia Rowley Lady Cholmeley [aged 27].
From 1899, whilst in the Guards, Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 22] he was Master of the Household Brigade at, Windsor from 1899 until he went to South Africa.
On 18th April 1903 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 26] and Mabel Janetta Waldo-Sibthorp Lady Cholmeley [aged 25] were married.
On 14th February 1904 Hugh Cholmeley 3rd Baronet [aged 64] died. His son Montagu [aged 27] succeeded 4th Baronet Cholmeley of Easton in Lincolnshire. [his wife] Mabel Janetta Waldo-Sibthorp Lady Cholmeley [aged 26] by marriage Lady Cholmeley of Easton in Lincolnshire.
On 7th February 1906 Hugh John Francis Sibthorp Cholmeley 5th Baronet was born to Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 29] and [his wife] Mabel Janetta Waldo-Sibthorp Lady Cholmeley [aged 28].
In 1907 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 30] was appointed Vice-President Of the Lincolnshire Agricultural Society.
In 1907 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 30] entered the Kesteven County Council without opposition, and was also a member Of the Grantham Board Of Guardians and Rural District Council, and was a J.P. for the Parts of Kesteven.
On 26th December 1910 [his mother] Edith Sophia Rowley Lady Cholmeley [aged 62] died.
Between 1912 and 1914 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 35] was Master of the Burton Hounds.
In 1913 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 36] won the Burton Hunt Members' Race in 1913 on "Cardinal".
On 24th December 1914 Montagu Aubrey Rowley Cholmeley 4th Baronet [aged 38] was killed in action at La Bassee, Western Front whilst serving with the 3rd Battalion (RESERVE OF OFFICERS), Grenadier Guards. Germans blew up one of the trenches further along the line, so that they could fire down his line of trench. Captain Cholmeley during an attack rushed forward towards the flank of the company which was and was shot through the head and killed instantaneously. His son Hugh [aged 8] succeeded 5th Baronet Cholmeley of Easton in Lincolnshire.
