On 10th October 1870 Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol was born to Augustus Henry Charles Hervey [aged 33] in Ickworth House Ickworth, Bury St Edmunds.

On 28th May 1875 [his father] Augustus Henry Charles Hervey [aged 37] died.

In 1896 [his brother] Frederick Hervey 4th Marquess of Bristol [aged 32] and [his sister-in-law] Alice Wythes Marchioness of Bristol [aged 21] were married.

On 7th August 1907 [his uncle] Frederick William John Hervey 3rd Marquess of Bristol [aged 73] died. His nephew [his brother] Frederick [aged 43] succeeded 4th Marquess of Bristol, 4th Earl Jermyn of Horningworth in Suffolk, 8th Earl Bristol, 9th Baron Hervey of Ickworth in Suffolk. [his sister-in-law] Alice Wythes Marchioness of Bristol [aged 32] by marriage Marchioness of Bristol.

On 19th October 1914 Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol [aged 44] and Jean Cochrane [aged 27] were married.

On 6th October 1915 [his son] Victor Hervey 6th Marquess of Bristol was born to Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol [aged 44] and [his wife] Jean Cochrane [aged 28]. He married 1. 6th October 1949 Pauline Mary Bolton and had issue 2. 23rd April 1960 his third cousin twice removed Ann Juliet Dorothea Maud Wentworth-Fitzwilliam Marchioness Bristol, daughter of William Henry Lawrence Peter Wentworth-Fitzwilliam 8th and 6th Earl Fitzwilliam 3. 12th July 1974 Yvonne Marie Sutton Marchioness Bristol and had issue.

In July 1932 Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol [aged 61] and Jean Cochrane [aged 45] were divorced.

On 6th October 1949 Victor Hervey 6th Marquess of Bristol [aged 34] and Pauline Mary Bolton were married. He the son of Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol [aged 78] and Jean Cochrane [aged 62].

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

In 1955 [his former wife] Jean Cochrane [aged 68] died.

In 1959 [his son] Victor Hervey 6th Marquess of Bristol [aged 43] and [his daughter-in-law] Pauline Mary Bolton were divorced.

On 5th April 1960 Herbert Hervey 5th Marquess of Bristol [aged 89] died. His son Victor [aged 44] succeeded 6th Marquess of Bristol, 6th Earl Jermyn of Horningworth in Suffolk, 10th Earl Bristol, 11th Baron Hervey of Ickworth in Suffolk.
