On 19th May 1653 [her father] Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex [aged 21] and [her mother] Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex [aged 17] were married. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Algernon Percy 10th Earl of Northumberland [aged 50] and [her grandmother] Anne Cecil. They were fourth cousin once removed.

In 1674 Anne Capell Countess Carlisle was born to Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex [aged 41] and Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex [aged 38].

John Evelyn's Diary. 18th April 1680. As for my Lord, he is a sober, wise, judicious, and pondering person, not illiterate beyond the rate of most noblemen in this age, very well versed in English history and affairs, industrious, frugal, methodical, and every way accomplished. His [her mother] Lady [aged 44] (being sister of the late [her uncle] Earl of Northumberland) is a wise, yet somewhat melancholy woman, setting her heart too much on the little lady, her daughter [aged 6], of whom she is over fond. They have a hopeful [her brother] son [aged 9] at the Academy.

In 1683 Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 14] and Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 9] were married. She the daughter of Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex [aged 50] and Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex [aged 47]. He the son of Edward Howard 2nd Earl Carlisle [aged 36] and Elizabeth Uvedale Countess Carlisle. They were third cousins.

On 13th July 1683 [her father] Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex [aged 51] committed suicide at the Tower of London [Map]. He was buried at St Peter ad Vincula Church, Tower of London [Map]. He was said to have been discovered in his chamber with his throat cut whilst awaiting execution for treason. His son [her brother] Algernon [aged 12] succeeded 2nd Earl Essex, 3rd Baron Capell Hadham.

On 28th February 1692 [her brother] Algernon Capell 2nd Earl Essex [aged 21] and [her sister-in-law] Mary Bentinck Countess Essex [aged 12] were married. She by marriage Countess Essex. She the daughter of William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland [aged 42] and Anne Villiers Countess Portland. He the son of [her father] Arthur Capell 1st Earl Essex and [her mother] Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex [aged 56]. They were third cousins.

On 23rd April 1692 [her father-in-law] Edward Howard 2nd Earl Carlisle [aged 45] died. His son [her husband] Charles [aged 23] succeeded 3rd Earl Carlisle. Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 18] by marriage Countess Carlisle.

On 14th August 1694 [her son] Henry Howard 4th Earl Carlisle was born to [her husband] Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 25] and Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 20]. He was educated at Eton College [Map] and Trinity College, Cambridge University [Map]. He married (1) 1717 his third cousin once removed Frances Spencer Countess Carlisle, daughter of Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and Arabella Cavendish, and had issue (2) 1743 his fourth cousin Isabella Byron Countess Carlisle, daughter of William Byron 4th Baron Byron and Frances Berkeley Baroness Byron, and had issue.

In 1696 [her daughter] Anne Howard Viscountess Irvine was born to [her husband] Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 27] and Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 22]. She married 1717 her fourth cousin Rich Ingram 5th Viscount Irvine, son of Arthur Ingram 3rd Viscount Irvine.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

In 1718 [her mother] Elizabeth Percy Countess Essex [aged 82] died.

On 1st May 1738 [her husband] Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 69] died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at Castle Howard Mausoleum. His son Henry [aged 43] succeeded 4th Earl Carlisle. Frances Spencer Countess Carlisle [aged 42] by marriage Countess Carlisle.

In 1739 [her daughter] Elizabeth Anne Howard [aged 38] died.

In 1743 Henry Howard 4th Earl Carlisle [aged 48] and Isabella Byron Countess Carlisle [aged 21] were married. She by marriage Countess Carlisle. The difference in their ages was 27 years. He the son of Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle and Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 69]. They were fourth cousins.

In 1752 Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 78] died.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.
