Bourgeois de Valenciennes. Count John of Hainaut had much to do in his time, especially in Holland. And the Count of Holland1 died without a male heir of his body, and Count John of Hainaut was the eldest by right of his mother; but the King of Germany, who then was, wished to dispute this with him, and came to the borders of Holland with great numbers of men-at-arms to seize the land. And when Count John of Hainaut learned of this, he summoned his friends from all sides and went to meet the king vigorously, and so well and so competently did he conduct himself that they came to an agreement; and the counties of Holland and Zeeland remained peacefully with Count John of Hainaut, and he bore the quartered arms of Hainaut, Holland, and Zeeland.

Albert was murdered in 1308 by his nephew John for his having forced his father Rudolph to forego his inheritance.
