Chronicle of Edward Hall [1496-1548]. [20th October 1532]. When the King should pass over the sea, he considered that the Scots had robbed his subjects, both by sea and land, and that no redress was made for the same, imagined that in his absence, they would attempt some outrageous enterprise against his people, wherefore like a prudent prince to be in a surety, he sent sir Arthur Darcy knight, with three hundred tall men to Berwick, to defend the invasions of the Scots. The Scots hearing of his coming, came into Northumberland, by the middle Marches, and came to a place called Fowbery, and in their journey fired certain villages and returned. Sir Arthur Darcy [aged 37] hearing of this adventure, was nothing content. Now at this season there lay at Berwick, Archibald Douglas Earl of Angus, which had married the Queen of Scots, the King's sister, and was banished Scotland and she was from him divorced, and married to another. The Scots bragged of their enterprise, and said that Sir Arthur had brought them good luck, and said, that he and the Earl of Angus, slept well in Berwick: they hearing of this brag, made a road with four hundred men into Scotland, and set a village on fire: then shortly assembled together, eight hundred Scots. When the Englishmen perceived the Scots, they caused their trumpet to blow a retreat, and the Earl and twenty with him, showed himself on a hill, even in the face of the Scots, and the trumpet blew at their backs, so that the Scots thought that there had been two companies, which caused the Scottes to fly, and the Englishmen followed, and slew a great number, and took many prisoners, and brought them to Berwick, the twentieth day of October.

On 30th June 1537 [his father] Thomas Darcy 1st Baron Darcy Templehurst [aged 70] was beheaded at Tower Hill [Map]. In 1539 he was postumously attainted; Baron Darcy of Darcy aka Templehurst forfeit.

In or before 1542 [his son] Edward Darcy was born to Arthur Darcy [aged 46] and [his wife] Mary Carew [aged 24] at Dartford, Kent [Map].

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

Tudor Tracts Chapter 4. [10th September 1547]. Like as also, a little before this onset, Sir Thomas Darcy [aged 40] upon his approach to the enemy was struck glancing wise, on the right side, with a bullet of one of their field pieces; and thereby his body bruised with the bowing in of his harness, his sword hilts broken, and the forefinger of his right hand beaten flat: even so, upon the parting of this fray, was Sir Arthur Darcy [aged 52] flashed at with swords, and so hurt upon the wedding finger of his right hand also, as it was counted for the first part of medicine to have it quite cut away.

In 1548 [his brother] George Darcy 1st Baron Darcy Aston [aged 51] was created 1st Baron Darcy of Aston. [his sister-in-law] Dorothy Melton Baroness Darcy [aged 42] by marriage Baroness Darcy of Aston. Some argue this was a restoration of his father's Barony although when he took his place in the House of Lords it was a junior Baron ie without the precedence of the former Barony suggesting it was a new creation. However, when his son [his nephew] John Darcy 2nd Baron Darcy Aston [aged 8] took his place in the House of Lords it was with the precedence of the former Barony.

Around 1550 [his son] Francis Darcy was born to Arthur Darcy [aged 55] and [his wife] Mary Carew [aged 33]. He married 1590 Katharine Darcy and had issue.

In 1551 Arthur Darcy [aged 56] was appointed Lieutenant of the Tower of London.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.
