William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent 1671-1740

Between 2nd March 1662 and 1671 Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 16] and Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 18] were married. She by marriage Countess Kent. He the son of [his grandfather] Henry Grey 10th Earl Kent and [his grandmother] Amabel Benn Countess Kent [aged 54].

In 1671 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent was born to Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 25] and Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 27].

On 21st February 1695 [his son] Anthony Grey 3rd Baron Lucas was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 24] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 19]. He married 17th February 1718 his sixth cousin Mary Tufton Countess Gower, daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet.

On 20th April 1695 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 24] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 19] were married. They had five sons and seven daughters of whom only three surviving her. He the son of Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 49] and Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 51].

Around 1696 [his son] Henry Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 25] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 20].

Around 1699 [his daughter] Jemima Grey Countess Ashburham was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 28] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 23]. She married before 30th October 1724 John Ashburnham 1st Earl Ashburnham, son of John Ashburnham 1st Baron Ashburnham and Bridget Vaughan Baroness Ashburnham, and had issue.

On 19th August 1702 Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent [aged 57] died. His son Henry [aged 31] succeeded 12th Earl Kent. Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 27] by marriage Countess Kent.

On 1st November 1702 Mary Lucas Countess Kent [aged 58] died. Her son Henry [aged 31] succeeded 2nd Baron Lucas of Crudwell.

On 20th October 1703 [his daughter] Henrietta de Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 32] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 28].

In 1704 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 33] was appointed Lord Chamberlain.

In 1704 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 33] was appointed Privy Council.

On 3rd June 1705 or 18th September 1721 Charles Butler 3rd Duke Ormond [aged 33] and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Crew Countess Arran [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Countess Arran. He the son of Thomas Butler 6th Earl Ossory and Emilia Nassau Beverweert Countess Ossory.

On 20th January 1706 [his daughter] Anne Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 35] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 30]. She married 9th January 1729 Charles Cavendish, son of William Cavendish 2nd Duke Devonshire and Rachel Russell Duchess Devonshire, and had issue.

In 1710 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 39] was created 1st Duke Kent, 1st Marquess Kent, 1st Viscount Gooderich. Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 34] by marriage Marchioness Kent.

On 4th January 1717 [his daughter] Henrietta de Grey [aged 13] died. Monument at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map].

Henrietta de Grey: On 20th October 1703 she was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent.

On 4th December 1717 [his son] Henry Grey [aged 21] died. He was buried at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map].

Henry Grey: Around 1696 he was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent.

On 17th February 1718 Anthony Grey 3rd Baron Lucas [aged 22] and Mary Tufton Countess Gower were married. She the daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet [aged 73] and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet. He the son of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 47] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 42]. They were sixth cousins.

On 20th February 1718 John Campbell 3rd Earl Breadalbaine and Holland [aged 21] and Amabel Grey [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 47] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 42]. He the son of John Campbell 2nd Earl Breadalbaine and Holland [aged 55] and Henrietta Villiers Countess Breadalbaine and Holland.

In May 1719 [his daughter] Mary Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 48] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 44]. She married before 7th January 1762 David Gregory.

On 21st July 1723 [his son] Anthony Grey 3rd Baron Lucas [aged 28] died by choking on an ear of barley the beard of which stuck in his throat. Monument at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map]. His niece Jemima succeeded 4th Baroness Lucas of Crudwell.

Anthony Grey 3rd Baron Lucas: On 21st February 1695 he was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent. On 17th February 1718 he and Mary Tufton Countess Gower were married. She the daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet. He the son of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent. They were sixth cousins. On 8th November 1718 Anthony Grey 3rd Baron Lucas by writ of acceleration 3rd Baron Lucas of Crudwell.

Before 30th October 1724 John Ashburnham 1st Earl Ashburnham [aged 37] and Jemima Grey Countess Ashburham [aged 25] were married. She by marriage Baroness Ashburnham of Ashburnham in Sussex. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 53] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent [aged 49].

On 9th January 1729 [his son-in-law] Charles Cavendish [aged 24] and Anne Grey [aged 22] were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 58] and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent. He the son of William Cavendish 2nd Duke Devonshire [aged 57] and Rachel Russell Duchess Devonshire.

On 24th March 1729 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 58] and Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent [aged 27] were married. She by marriage Duchess Kent. The difference in their ages was 30 years. She the daughter of William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland [aged 57]. He the son of Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent and Mary Lucas Countess Kent.

In or after 1730 [his daughter] Anne Sophia Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 59] and [his wife] Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent [aged 28]. She married 21st November 1748 her first cousin Bishop John Egerton, son of Bishop Henry Egerton and Elizabeth Adriana Bentinck, and had issue.

On 7th July 1731 [his daughter] Jemima Grey Countess Ashburham [aged 32] died.

Around 1732 [his son] George Grey was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 61] and [his wife] Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent [aged 30]. He died aged one in 1733.

In 1733 [his son] George Grey [aged 1] died.

On 20th September 1733 [his daughter] Anne Grey [aged 27] died. She was buried at the De Grey Mausoleum, St John the Baptist Church, Flitton [Map].

Anne Grey: On 20th January 1706 she was born to Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent. On 9th January 1729 Charles Cavendish and she were married. She the daughter of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and Jemima Crew Marchioness Kent. He the son of William Cavendish 2nd Duke Devonshire and Rachel Russell Duchess Devonshire.

In 1740 Philip Yorke 2nd Earl of Hardwicke [aged 19] and Jemima Campbell 2nd Marchioness Grey [aged 16] were married. She being the heiress of Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 69]. She the daughter of [his former son-in-law] John Campbell 3rd Earl Breadalbaine and Holland [aged 43] and Amabel Grey. He the son of Philip Yorke 1st Earl of Hardwicke [aged 49] and Margaret Cocks Countess Hardwicke.

In 1740 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 69] was created 1st Marquess Grey. [his wife] Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent [aged 38] by marriage Marchioness Grey.

On 5th June 1740 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent [aged 69] died without surviving male issue. Duke Kent, Marquess Kent, Earl Kent and Viscount Gooderich extinct. His granddaughter Jemima [aged 16] succeeded 2nd Marchioness Grey.

Sophia Bentinck Duchess Kent: On 4th April 1701 she was born to William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland. On 24th March 1729 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent and she were married. She by marriage Duchess Kent. The difference in their ages was 30 years. She the daughter of William Bentinck 1st Earl of Portland and Jane Martha Temple Countess Portland. He the son of Anthony Grey 11th Earl Kent and Mary Lucas Countess Kent. In 1740 Henry Grey 1st Duke Kent was created 1st Marquess Grey. She by marriage Marchioness Grey.
