Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke 1414-1487

On 28th October 1407 [his father] John Greystoke 4th Baron Greystoke [aged 18] and [his mother] Elizabeth Ferrers Baroness Greystoke [aged 14] were married at Greystoke Castle, Cumberland. She by marriage Baroness Greystoke. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Robert Ferrers and [his grandmother] Joan Beaufort Countess of Westmoreland [aged 28]. They were fifth cousins. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Around 1414 Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke was born to John Greystoke 4th Baron Greystoke [aged 25] and Elizabeth Ferrers Baroness Greystoke [aged 21]. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 6th April 1418 [his grandfather] Ralph Greystoke 3rd Baron Greystoke [aged 64] died. He was buried at Newminster Abbey, Northumberland [Map]. His son [his father] John [aged 29] succeeded 4th Baron Greystoke.

In 1434 [his mother] Elizabeth Ferrers Baroness Greystoke [aged 41] died.

In or before 1436 Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke [aged 21] and Elizabeth Fitzhugh Baroness Greystoke were married. She by marriage Baroness Greystoke. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

In 1436 [his father] John Greystoke 4th Baron Greystoke [aged 47] died. He was buried at St Andrew's Church, Greystoke [Map]. His son Ralph [aged 22] succeeded 5th Baron Greystoke. Monument in St Andrew's Church, Greystoke [Map]. Fluted Period. His Pauldrons are unusual in their style. His arms are fully encased in plate with a couter (or coude) protecting the elbow joint. Fine detail of the straps that held the armour in place may be seen on the underarms. A gorget, has replaced the camail. His head is, very unusually, bare as is his face, his hair cut in the style so typical of portraits of Henry V. The effigy was possibly made somewhat after John's death or, possibly, that the effigy has been incorrectly assigned. His head rests on the decorated tournament helm. He wears the Lancastrian Esses Collar. John had supported the usurpation of Richard II by Henry IV in the 1390s; staunch Lancastrians. John had married, in 1407, Elizabeth Ferrers, daughter of Joan Beaufort, daughter of John of Gaunt, son of King Edward III. Two sword belts: diagonal (bawdric) and horizontal. The jupon, beneath the waist has been replaced by a fauld; horizontal strips of metal that wrap around.

John Greystoke 4th Baron Greystoke: In 1389 he was born to Ralph Greystoke 3rd Baron Greystoke and Catherine Clifford Baroness Greystoke. On 28th October 1407 John Greystoke 4th Baron Greystoke and Elizabeth Ferrers Baroness Greystoke were married at Greystoke Castle, Cumberland. She by marriage Baroness Greystoke. She the daughter of Robert Ferrers and Joan Beaufort Countess of Westmoreland. They were fifth cousins. She a great granddaughter of King Edward III of England. On 6th April 1418 Ralph Greystoke 3rd Baron Greystoke died. He was buried at Newminster Abbey, Northumberland [Map]. His son John succeeded 4th Baron Greystoke.

In 1436 [his daughter] Elizabeth Greystoke Baroness Scrope Masham was born to Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke [aged 22] and [his wife] Elizabeth Fitzhugh Baroness Greystoke and Margaret Greystoke. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married 1. her third cousin once removed Gilbert Talbot, son of John Talbot 2nd Earl of Shrewsbury and Elizabeth Butler Countess Shrewsbury and Waterford, and had issue 2. after 4th May 1453 her second cousin twice removed Thomas Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Masham, son of John Scrope 4th Baron Scrope of Masham and Elizabeth Chaworth Baroness Scrope Masham, and had issue.

Around 1442 [his daughter] Margaret Greystoke was born to Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke [aged 28] and [his wife] Elizabeth Fitzhugh Baroness Greystoke. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. She married before 1469 her second cousin Thomas Grey and had issue.

Around 1443 [his son] Robert Greystoke was born to Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke [aged 29] and [his wife] Elizabeth Fitzhugh Baroness Greystoke. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England. He married his half second cousin Elizabeth Grey, daughter of Edmund Grey 1st Earl Kent and Katherine Percy, and had issue.

After 4th May 1453 [his son-in-law] Thomas Scrope 5th Baron Scrope of Masham [aged 24] and [his daughter] Elizabeth Greystoke Baroness Scrope Masham [aged 17] were married. They were second cousin twice removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Chronicle of Gregory. And this mater was not taryd but full prevely i-wrought; and she sende letters unto alle her ehyffe offycers that they wold doo the same, and that they shulde warne alle the servantys that lovyd her or purposyd to kepe and rejoyse her of Yysce, to wayte a-pon her at Hulle by that day as hit a-poyntyd by hyr. Alle thes pepylle were gaderyd and conveyde so prevely that they wer hole in nombyr of xvM [Note. 15000] or any man wolde be-leve it; in so moche yf any man said, or tolde, or talkyd of suche gaderyng, he shulde be schende, and some were in grete donger, for the common pepylle said by thoo that told the, troughthe, "Ye talke ryght ye wolde hit were," and gave noo credens of her sayynge. But the laste the lordys purposyd to knowe the troughthe. And the ix day of December [1460] nexte folowyng the Duke of Yorke [aged 49], the Erle of Salysbury [aged 60], the Erle Rutlond [aged 17] (he was the Duke of Yorke is secunde sone, one the beste dysposyd lord in this londe), and Syr Thomas Haryngdon [aged 60], whythe many mo knyghtys and quyers and grete pepylle with hem, and soo departyd out of London towarde Yorke, &c.

Patent Rolls. 17th March 1465. Grant to the king's kinsman Ralph, lord of Graystok [aged 51], knight, and the, heirs male of his body of the manors and lordships of Storthwayte, Garton and Melburne, co. York, with their members, worth 60/. yearly, and the advowson or patronage of the priory of Kirkeham, co. York, worth nothings and the manor of Ravensthorp, co. York, worth 35/. yearly, the custody of which was granted by letters patent dated 5 November, 1 Edward IV. to Robert Danby and Thomas Wytham [aged 45], chancellor of the Exchequer, for 20 years from Michaelmas then last past at a rent of 26/. 13s, 4d. yearly, with a toft and a bovate of land in Boltby, co. York, late of John son of William de la Boure, worth 2^. yearly, and the said 26/. 13^. 4d. and all issues and arrears of the above premises from 3 March before the said 5 November, and pardon to the said Ralph, Robert and Thomas of all accounts for the same. By p.s. Vacated by surrender and cancelled because the king granted the above I to him and the heirs male of his body by other letters patent on 30 November, 8 Edward IV.

Before 1469 [his son-in-law] Thomas Grey [aged 22] and [his daughter] Margaret Greystoke [aged 26] were married. They were second cousins. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

On 17th June 1483 [his son] Robert Greystoke [aged 40] died.

On 1st June 1487 Ralph Greystoke 5th Baron Greystoke [aged 73] died. His granddaughter Elizabeth [aged 15] succeeded 6th Baroness Greystoke.
