On 3rd August 1553 Queen Mary I of England and Ireland [aged 37] made her formal entrance into London.

Strype's Complete History of England describes Mary's entrance to the Tower:

There met her as humble supplicants the Duke of Norfolk [aged 80], who had been a prisoner ever since his son the Earl of Surrey was put to death by King Henry the ; Edward Courtenay [aged 26], son of the [his father] Marquis of Exeter who was executed in the year 1538; Gardiner [aged 70], deprived of his Bishopric of Winchester about two years before; and the Dowager Duchess of Somerset [aged 56]. They presented themselves on their knees, and Gardiner in the name of them all, made a congratulatory speech to the Queen, who kindly raised them one after another, saluted them, saying they were her own proper prisoners and ordered their immediate discharge. The next day she restored Courtenay to the honor of his family. Gardiner not only obtained his bishopric again but on the 23rd of August following was made Lord Chancellor, even though he had formerly subscribed to the Sentence of Divorce against the Queen's mother and had written in defence of King Henry's proceedings.

Henry Machyn's Diary. 5th August 1553. [The Queen [aged 37] released from prison the lord Courtenay [aged 26], soon after created earl] of Denshyre, and odur moo.

Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. The Duke of Norfolke [aged 80] and my Lord Courtney [aged 26] were deliuered out of the Tower this 10th of August[ 1553].

Note. Riot at the Paul's Cross sermon. This incident is noticed in the public chronicles. Bourne, the preacher, offended the audience by speaking vehemently in the defence of bishop Bonner, and extremely against bishop Ridley. One of the populace threw a dagger at Bourne, which struck one of the sideposts of the pulpit. Maister Bradford, the celebrated Reformer, came forward to persuade the people to quietness, and by the help of that worthy man and of maister Rogers, (both of whom were afterwards sacrificed in cold blood by their religious adversaries,) Bourne was conveyed safely away into Paul's School. Grafton's Abridgement, 1566, and Stowe's Summarie of the same date.

The privy council, which was sitting at the Tower, took immediate alarm at this difturbance. The "order taken" on the same day, in concert with the lord mayor, will be found in their Register. (transcript in MS. Harl. 643, f. 1.) On the 16th Homfrey Palden was "committed to the counter for seditious wordes uttered by him againste the preacher Mr. Burne for his sermon at Paule's crosse on Sunday last;" and the same day the celebrated Bradford and Veron, "two seditious preachers," were committed to the Tower, as was "Theodore Basill, alias Thomas Beacon, another seditious preacher." Ibid. pp. 2b, 3.

On 3rd September 1553 Edward Courtenay 1st Earl Devon [aged 26] was created 1st Earl Devon. The Earldom was created with a special remainder i.e. to his heirs male forever, rather than to the heirs male of his body, so that on his death in 1556 he was succeeded by his fourth cousin William Courtenay 2nd Earl Devon [aged 24] who was not a descendant of his. The position was not made clear, however, until 1831, when the 9th Earl, William "Kitty" Courtenay 9th Earl Devon claimed the Earldom and became the de facto Earl of Devon.

On 1st October 1553 Queen Mary I of England and Ireland [aged 37] was crowned I Queen of England and Ireland at Westminster Abbey [Map].

At present there is no other occupation than the cutting off of heads and inflicting exemplary punishments Jane of Suffolk [deceased], who made herself Queen, and her husband [deceased], have been executed; Courtenay [aged 27] is in the Tower; and this very day we expect the Lady Elizabeth [aged 20] to arrive here, who they say has lived loosely like her mother and is now with child.

Calendar of State Papers of Spain. 19th February 1554. Gaspard Schetz to the Queen Dowager.

Madam: Although I believe your Majesty to be informed of occurrences in England, I am unwilling not to send you the news that have reached us this morning in a letter of the 15th instant. It relates that the Queen has caused the rebels to be punished: the Lady Jane [deceased] and her husband [deceased], the Duke of Suffolk's [aged 37] son, have been decapitated; the White Rose [aged 27] has been sent back to the Tower [Map], where are also the Duke of Suffolk with two of his brothers [Note. Thomas Grey and John Grey [aged 30]] and guilty lords to the number of 27. They write that, of the soldiers who abandoned the Duke of Norfolk [aged 81] on the field and joined the rebels, 40 have been hanged and 200 more condemned to the same penalty. They say that the said Duke has died in his own country. The Earl of Pembroke [aged 53] has been sent down to Kent with 300 light horse to discover who took part in the rebellion and execute justice. This, Madam, is the substance of what I have heard, together with a report that it is being said in England that my Lord our Prince is to come with 8,000 Spanish soldiers, about which the English are not best pleased.

They say the Queen is sending hither an ambassador, the Viscount Fitzwalter [aged 47] (Fewaters), who will be able to give your Majesty more trustworthy information.
