Know that we have appointed our beloved kinsman and faithful subject, John of Brittany, earl of Richmond, to be our lieutenant in Scotland, and our keeper of that land, for so long as it shall please us: so that he may have and maintain, of his own household, in the same land, sixty men-at-arms for the keeping of the aforesaid land. And from the feast of Saint Michael next to come until the feast of the Purification of Blessed Mary then next following, both days inclusive, he shall receive from us, each day, ten marks by the hand of our chamberlain of the said land, for the time being, for the support of the aforesaid men-at-arms. Article 20 describes at length the offences committed by Gaveston; he was once more condemned to exile and was to abjure the realm by 1 November.

Sempringham Continuation. In the month of October next following, sir Robert Bruce, king of Scotland, pursued the king of England as far as to Blackmoor, and on 21st October 1322 the army of the king of England was defeated by the Scots near the town of Coxwold, and the earl of Richmond [aged 56] was taken prisoner by the Scotch, and sir John Darcy, and many other knights and esquires, and others of the ranks, fled to York, and the Scotch burnt all the country and laid it waste as far as York, and came over the Wolds to Malton and all round, and they plundered all the country.

The Earl of Hereford, Humphrey de Bohun, and the Earl of Norfolk, Roger Bigod, were in dispute with the King as to whether he was, as a vassal, obliged to fight in France. John of Brittany, around 1266-1334, Earl of Richmond, nephew of King Edward IV being the son of King Edward's sister [his mother] Beatrice. Lord William of Mortimer died 1297, son of Roger, 1st Baron Mortimer, and John St John, -1302, Lieutenant of the Duchy of Aquitaine in 1293.
