Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet 1607-1678

Around 1600 [his father] Richard Musgrave 1st Baronet [aged 15] and [his mother] Frances Wharton were married. They were fourth cousin once removed.

On 21st May 1607 Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet was born to Richard Musgrave 1st Baronet [aged 22] and Frances Wharton.

On 6th November 1615 [his father] Richard Musgrave 1st Baronet [aged 30] died at Naples [Map]. His son Philip [aged 8] succeeded 2nd Baronet Musgrave of Hartley Castle in Westmoreland.

Around 1632 [his son] Christopher Musgrave 4th Baronet was born to Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 24]. He married 1. 31st May 1660 Mary Cogan and had issue 2. on or after 16th April 1671 Elizabeth Francklyn Lady Musgrave.

In April 1640 Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 32] was elected MP Westmoreland in the Short Parliament.

In November 1640 Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 33] was elected MP Westmoreland in the Long Parliament.

After 1643 Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 35] was appointed Governor of Carlisle Castle.

On 2nd July 1644 the Battle of Marston Moor was fought near Tockwith [Map] in Yorkshire. Alexander Seton aka Montgomerie 6th Earl Eglinton [aged 56] fought for the Royal army. Lionel Carey [aged 22] was killed. John Hay 1st Marquess Tweeddale [aged 18] fought for the Parliamentary army.

At the Battle of Marston Moor Lucas [aged 31] swept Fairfax's Yorkshire horse before him, but later in the day he was taken prisoner, in a battle won decisively by Parliament.

John Dolben [aged 19] fought for the Royalists.

William Eure was killed.

Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 37] fought for the Royalists.

John Fenwick [aged 42] was killed.

John Evelyn's Diary. 30th October 1649. I was at the funeral of one Mr. Downes, a sober English gentleman. We accompanied his corpse to Charenton, where he was interred in a cabbage-garden, yet with the office of our church, which was said before in our chapel at Paris. Here I saw also where they buried the great soldier, Gassion, who had a tomb built over him like a fountain, the design and materials mean enough. I returned to Paris with Sir Philip Musgrave [aged 42], and Sir Marmaduke Langdale, since Lord Langdale. Memorandum. This was a very sickly and mortal autumn.

Between September 1651 and November 1651 a rebellion against the Royalist leader of the Isle of Man James Stanley 7th Earl of Derby [aged 44] who had been captured at the Battle of Worcester. His wife Charlotte Thouars Countess Derby [aged 51] resisted the rebels with the aid of Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 44] and Illiam Dhone (her husband's Receiver General). The Countess eventually surrendered after hearing of her husband's death. Illiam Dhone changed sides and worked with Parliamentarian soldiers to achieve a bloodless coup. Illiam Dhone was eventually arrested by the Earl's son Charles Stanley 8th Earl of Derby [aged 23] and executed by firing squad at Hango Hill on 2nd January 1663.

On 3rd September 1651 at Worcester, Worcestershire [Map] the Battle of Worcester Oliver Cromwell [aged 52] commanded the Parliamentary army with Charles Howard 1st Earl Carlisle [aged 22]. In the Royalist army Francis Talbot 11th Earl of Shrewsbury [aged 28], Thomas Blagge [aged 38] and Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 22] fought. Thomas Wentworth 1st Earl Cleveland [aged 60] was captured. Giles Strangeways [aged 36] provided 300 gold pieces to King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 21] following his defeat to aid his escape.

Henry Lyttelton 2nd Baronet [aged 27] fought for the Royalists, was captured and spent 17 months imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map].

Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 44] fought for th Royalists.

On 31st May 1660 [his son] Christopher Musgrave 4th Baronet [aged 28] and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Cogan were married.

On or after 16th April 1671 [his son] Christopher Musgrave 4th Baronet [aged 39] and [his daughter-in-law] Elizabeth Francklyn Lady Musgrave were married by a license dated 16th April 1671.

On 7th February 1678 Philip Musgrave 2nd Baronet [aged 70] died. His son Richard succeeded 3rd Baronet Musgrave of Hartley Castle in Westmoreland.
