Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Life of Charles VI by a Monk of St Denis. On the twenty-sixth day of the month of May, Lady Valentina, wife of the Lord Duke of Touraine, gave birth to a son in the royal house of Saint-Pol in Paris. Two days later he was baptised there with great solemnity, and, having been lifted from the sacred font by the Lord Duke of Bourbon, was named Charles. The father, although still of youthful age and in many practical matters easily following his heart, nevertheless looked to the future with a keen eye and, wishing to enrich his offspring with ample possessions, acquired the county of Blois by purchase. He quickly brought the count to this, since he had no male heir, for his son, who had taken the daughter of the Duke of Berry as his wife, had died. By title of purchase also he bought, for himself and his heirs, the land of the Lord de Fora, the Lord de Gandelus, and of many other knights dwelling in the diocese of Reims, with the condition added that they should receive the revenues and profits of their lordships for as long as they lived among men. Again yielding to his brother's prayers, the king gave him the duchy of Orléans in exchange for the duchy of Touraine, to be possessed in perpetuity. The people of Orléans bore this with difficulty and, not fearing to incur the duke's indignation, at once, by the unanimous consent of all, sent envoys to the king, to persuade him that they should not be separated from the crown. The chief bearer of the embassy was the Bishop of Orléans, Lord John Nico, who was called, and not undeservedly, the jewel among the lawyers of the world. When he had been placed in the council of princes who attend by office upon secret deliberations, after the proper words of greeting, they report, under correction, that he spoke as follows:

Not long after, the Duchess of Orléans [aged 22], the wife of the Lord Duke of Orléans [aged 21], the brother of the king, bore a son, whom it pleased to name Philip.

Dum sic rex peregrinis vexaretur incommodis, mensis augusti vicesima quarta die, in domo regia Sancti Pauli ei peperit fliam regina venerabilis, que baptizata Maria vocata fuit; et hanc Deo dicandam et ejus servicio perpetuo mancipandam vovit, si ipsum a tenebris ignorancie liberaret et votum quod emiserat approbaret. Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.
