On 14th February 1733 [his father] John Spencer [aged 24] and [his mother] Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 16] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] John Carteret 2nd Earl Granville [aged 42] and [his grandmother] Frances Worsley Countess Granville [aged 40]. He the son of Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland. They were fifth cousin once removed.

On 19th December 1734 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer was born to John Spencer [aged 26] and Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 18] at Althorp House, Northamptonshire [Map].

On 18th October 1744 Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough [aged 84] died. The majority of her considerable estate was left to her great-grandson John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 9] with the condition that he could not accept a political office under the government: "from any King or Queen of these realms any pension, or any office or employment, civil or military" (except the Rangership of Windsor Great or Little Park), the estate would pass to the next heir "as if the same John Spencer were actually dead."

On 20th December 1755 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 21] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 18] were married at Althorp House, Northamptonshire [Map]. He the son of John Spencer and Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 39].

On 9th December 1756 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 21] was elected MP Warwick.

On 7th June 1757 [his daughter] Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire was born to John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 22] and [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 20] at Althorp House, Northamptonshire [Map]. She married 7th June 1774 her fourth cousin William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire, son of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington, and had issue.

On 1st September 1758 [his son] George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer was born to John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 23] and [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 21]. He married 6th March 1781 Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer, daughter of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan, and had issue.

On 3rd April 1761 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 26] was created 1st Viscount Spencer, 1st Baron Spencer Althorp. [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 23] by marriage Viscountess Spencer, 1st Baroness Spencer Althorp.

The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel offer one of the most vivid and immediate accounts of 14th-century Europe, written by a knight who lived through the events he describes, and experienced some of them first hand. On 16th June 1761 [his daughter] Henrietta Frances Spencer Countess Bessborough was born to John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 26] and [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 24]. She married 27th November 1780 her fifth cousin Frederick Ponsonby 3rd Earl Bessborough, son of William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough and Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough, and had issue.

In 1765 [his daughter] Charlotte Spencer was born to John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 30] and [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 27]. She died aged one in 1766.

On 1st November 1765 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 30] was created 1st Earl Spencer, 1st Viscount Althorp. [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 28] by marriage Countess Spencer, 1st Viscountess Althorp.

In 1766 [his daughter] Charlotte Spencer [aged 1] died.

In 1769 [his daughter] Louisa Spencer was born to John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 34] and [his wife] Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 31]. She died aged less than one years old.

In 1769 [his daughter] Louisa Spencer died.

On 7th June 1774 [his son-in-law] William Cavendish 5th Duke Devonshire [aged 26] and Georgiana Spencer Duchess Devonshire [aged 17] were married at St Mary's Church, Wimbledon. It was her 17th birthday. She by marriage Duchess Devonshire. She the daughter of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 39] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 37]. He the son of William Cavendish 4th Duke Devonshire and Charlotte Elizabeth Boyle Marchioness Hartington. They were fourth cousins.

On 21st August 1780 [his mother] Georgiana Caroline Carteret [aged 64] died.

On 27th November 1780 [his son-in-law] Frederick Ponsonby 3rd Earl Bessborough [aged 22] and Henrietta Frances Spencer Countess Bessborough [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Bessborough. She the daughter of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 45] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 43]. He the son of William Ponsonby 2nd Earl Bessborough [aged 76] and Caroline Cavendish Countess Bessborough. They were fifth cousins.

On 6th March 1781 George John Spencer 2nd Earl Spencer [aged 22] and Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of Charles Bingham 1st Earl Lucan [aged 45] and Margaret Smith Countess Lucan [aged 41]. He the son of John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 46] and Margaret Georgiana Poyntz Countess Spencer [aged 43].

On 31st October 1783 John Spencer 1st Earl Spencer [aged 48] died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at St Mary the Virgin Church, Great Brington, Northamptonshire. His son George [aged 25] succeeded 2nd Earl Spencer, 2nd Viscount Althorp, 2nd Viscount Spencer, 2nd Baron Spencer Althorp. Lavinia Bingham Countess Spencer [aged 21] by marriage Countess Spencer.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
