Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.

On 27th December 1692 Francis Blake Delaval was born to Edward Delaval of South Dissington [aged 28] and Mary Blake [aged 28].
On or before 7th December 1711 [his mother] Mary Blake [aged 47] died. She was buried 7th December 1711.
In 1716 Francis Blake Delaval [aged 23] was elected MP Northumberland at a by-election.
In March 1719 Francis Blake Delaval [aged 26] wrote to his father ... The Admiralty have ... given me a commission to command the Gosport, a new forty gun ship. She is at Deptford and I shall go down on Saturday to put her in commission.
On 22nd June 1723 [his uncle] Admiral George Delaval [aged 56] died. He was buried at Church of our Lady Seaton Delaval [Map] on 4th July 1723. His nephew Francis Blake Delaval [aged 30] inherited Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland [Map] which had yet to be completed. By 1729 the house was completed according to Vanbrugh's original plan at an estimated cost of £10,000.
Before 1st July 1725 Francis Blake Delaval [aged 32] and Rhoda Apreece were married.
On 1st July 1725 Rhoda Delaval was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 32] and Rhoda Apreece. She was named after her mother. She married 23rd May 1751 Edward Astley 4th Baronet, son of Jacob Astley 3rd Baronet and Lucy L'Estrange, and had issue.
On 16th March 1727 Francis Blake Delaval was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 34] and Rhoda Apreece. He married before 10th January 1764 his half sixth cousin Isabella Tufton, daughter of Thomas Tufton 6th Earl of Thanet and Catherine Cavendish Countess Isle Thanet.
On 17th March 1728 John Delaval 1st Baron Delaval was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 35] and Rhoda Apreece. He married in or before 1755 his first cousin Susanna Robinson Baroness Delaval and had issue.
In 1729 Francis Blake Delaval [aged 36] was appointed High Sheriff of Northumberland.
In 1729 [his son] Edward Hussey Delaval was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 36] and Rhoda Apreece.
In 1742 Sarah Delaval Countess Mexborough was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 49] and Rhoda Apreece. She married 1760 John Savile 1st Earl Mexborough and had issue.
Around 1743 [his daughter] Anne Hussey Delaval was born to Francis Blake Delaval [aged 50] and Rhoda Apreece. She married 6th October 1759 William Stanhope, son of Philip Stanhope 3rd Earl Chesterfield and Elizabeth Savile, and had issue.
On 3rd August 1744 [his father] Edward Delaval of South Dissington [aged 80] died. He was buried at Newburn, Northumberland [Map].
On 23rd April 1749 [his mother-in-law] Sarah Hussey [aged 77] died. Her daughter Rhoda Apreece inherited Doddington Hall [Map].
On 23rd May 1751 Edward Astley 4th Baronet [aged 21] and Rhoda Delaval [aged 25] were married.
On 9th December 1752 Francis Blake Delaval [aged 59] died after falling down steps at his home Seaton Delaval Hall, Northumberland [Map].
In 1758 Rhoda Apreece died. John Delaval 1st Baron Delaval [aged 29] inherited Doddington Hall [Map].
