Biography of Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes 1695-1770

Paternal Family Tree: Sandes aka Sandys

On 14th October 1694 [his father] Edwin Sandes (age 35) and [his mother] Alice Rushout were married.

On 10th August 1695 Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes was born to [his father] Edwin Sandes (age 36) and [his mother] Alice Rushout.

In 1699 [his father] Edwin Sandes (age 40) died.

In 1718 Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 22) was elected MP Worcester. He represented the seat for twenty-five years.

On 9th July 1725 Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 29) and Letitia Tipping were married.

On 28th April 1726 [his son] Edwin Sandys 2nd Baron Sandes was born to Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 30) and [his wife] Letitia Tipping. He married 26th January 1769 Anne Maria Colebrooke.

In 1727 [his son] Cheek Sandes was born to Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 31) and [his wife] Letitia Tipping. He died aged ten in 1737.

On 30th September 1728 [his son] Thomas Sandes was born to Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 33) and [his wife] Letitia Tipping.

On or before 24th September 1729 [his son] Martin Sandes was born to Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 34) and [his wife] Letitia Tipping. He was baptised on 24 Sep 1729. He married Mary Trumbull and had issue.

Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

In 1737 [his son] Cheek Sandes (age 10) died.

On 20th December 1743 Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 48) was created 1st Baron Sandys of Ombersley in Worcestershire.

On 26th September 1768 [his son] Martin Sandes (age 39) died.

On 26th January 1769 [his son] Edwin Sandys 2nd Baron Sandes (age 42) and [his daughter-in-law] Anne Maria Colebrooke were married.

On 21st April 1770 Samuel Sandys 1st Baron Sandes (age 74) died after having been injured when his post-chaise overturned on Highgate Hill Highgate. His son Edwin (age 43) succeeded 2nd Baron Sandys of Ombersley in Worcestershire.

In 1779 [his former wife] Letitia Tipping died.
