Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

On 3rd July 1839 [his father] George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 39] and [his mother] Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 29] were married. She by marriage Countess Clarendon. She the daughter of [his grandfather] James Walter Grimston 1st Earl Verulam [aged 63] and [his grandmother] Charlotte Jenkinson Countess Verulam.

On 11th February 1846 Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon was born to George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 46] and Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 35] at the Vice Regal Lodge, Dublin.

On 17th August 1860 [his brother-in-law] Edward Bootle Wibraham 1st Earl Lathom [aged 22] and [his sister] Alice Villiers Countess Lathom [aged 19] were married. She the daughter of [his father] George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 60] and [his mother] Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 50].

On 31st May 1864 [his brother-in-law] Frederick Arthur Stanley 16th Earl of Derby [aged 23] and [his sister] Constance Villiers Countess Derby [aged 24] were married. She the daughter of [his father] George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 64] and [his mother] Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 54]. He the son of Edward Smith-Stanley 14th Earl of Derby [aged 65] and Emma Caroline Bootle-Wilbraham Countess Derby [aged 59].

On 5th May 1868 [his brother-in-law] Odo Russell 1st Baron Ampthill [aged 39] and [his sister] Emily Theresa Villiers Baroness Ampthill [aged 25] were married. She the daughter of [his father] George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 68] and [his mother] Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 58]. They were fifth cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

In 1869 Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 22] was elected MP Breconshire which seat he held until 1870.

On 27th June 1870 [his father] George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon [aged 70] died. His son Edward [aged 24] succeeded 5th Earl Clarendon, 5th Baron Hyde of Hindon in Wiltshire 1756.

In 1874 [his mother] Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon [aged 63] died.

On 6th September 1876 Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 30] and Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon [aged 19] were married at Harbridge, Someroy. She by marriage Countess Clarendon. She the daughter of James Charles Agar 3rd Earl Normanton [aged 57] and Caroline Susan Augusta Barrington Countess Normanton [aged 41]. He the son of George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon and Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon. They were sixth cousins. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 7th June 1877 [his son] George Herbert Hyde Villiers 6th Earl Clarendon was born to Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 31] and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon [aged 20] at 31 Upper Brook Street, Mayfair. He married 1905 Adeline Verena Ishbel Cocks Countess of Clarendon.

In 1878 [his daughter] Edith Villiers Countess Mount Edgecumbe was born to Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 31] and [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon [aged 20] She married 1911 her fourth cousin once removed Piers Edgcumbe 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe, son of William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe and Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe.

In 1880 [his brother-in-law] Edward Bootle Wibraham 1st Earl Lathom [aged 42] was created 1st Earl Lathom. [his sister] Alice Villiers Countess Lathom [aged 39] by marriage Countess Lathom.

On 21st April 1893 Edward Henry Stanley 15th Earl of Derby [aged 66] died at Knowsley, Lancashire. His brother [his brother-in-law] Frederick [aged 52] succeeded 16th Earl Derby, 10th Baronet Stanley of Bickerstaffe. [his sister] Constance Villiers Countess Derby [aged 53] by marriage Countess Derby.

On 9th May 1894 [his wife] Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon [aged 36] died.

In 1897 [his sister] Alice Villiers Countess Lathom [aged 56] died.

The Queen [aged 81] has been pleased to appoint George Richard Penn [aged 39], Earl Howe, to be one of the Lords in Waiting in Ordinary to Her Majesty, in the room of Edward Hyde, Earl of Clarendon [aged 54], resigned.

In 1905 George Herbert Hyde Villiers 6th Earl Clarendon [aged 27] and Adeline Verena Ishbel Cocks Countess of Clarendon [aged 19] were married. He the son of Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 58] and Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon.

On 5th August 1908 Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 62] and Emma Hatch [aged 53] were married at the Chapel Royal, St James's Palace. She by marriage Countess Clarendon. He the son of George William Villiers 4th Earl Clarendon and Katherine Grimston Countess Clarendon.

In 1911 [his son-in-law] Piers Edgcumbe 5th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe [aged 46] and Edith Villiers Countess Mount Edgecumbe [aged 33] were married. There was no issue from the marriage. She the daughter of Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 64] and Caroline Elizabeth Agar Countess Clarendon. He the son of William Henry Edgecumbe 4th Earl of Mount Edgcumbe [aged 77] and Katherine Elizabeth Hamilton Countess Mount Edgcumbe. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland.

On 2nd October 1914 Edward Villiers 5th Earl Clarendon [aged 68] died at The Grove, Watford [Map]. His son George [aged 37] succeeded 6th Earl Clarendon, 6th Baron Hyde of Hindon in Wiltshire 1756. Adeline Verena Ishbel Cocks Countess of Clarendon [aged 28] by marriage Countess Clarendon.

On 9th March 1935 [his former wife] Emma Hatch Countess of Clarendon [aged 80] died.
