She the daughter of [her grandfather] John Leslie 6th Earl Rothes [aged 37] and [her grandmother] Anne Erskine Countess of Rothes [aged 40]. He the son of Alexander Leslie 1st Earl Leven [aged 57].

On 25th July 1646 Francis Scott 2nd Earl Buccleuch [aged 19] and [her mother] Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 26] were married. She by marriage Countess Buccleuch. She the daughter of [her grandfather] John Leslie 6th Earl Rothes and [her grandmother] Anne Erskine Countess of Rothes. He the son of Walter Scott 1st Earl Buccleuch and Mary Hay Countess Buccleuch. They were half third cousins.

In April 1650 [her father] David Wemyss 2nd Earl of Wemyss [aged 39] and Helenor Fleming were married. She the daughter of John Fleming 2nd Earl Wigtown and Margaret Livingston Countess Wigtown. He the son of [her grandfather] John Wemyss 1st Earl of Wemyss and [her grandmother] Jane Gray Countess Wemyss. They were half fourth cousins. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

On 1st January 1659 Margaret Wemyss Countess Cromartie 3rd Countess Wemyss was born to David Wemyss 2nd Earl of Wemyss [aged 48] and Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 38].

On 11th March 1661 [her half-sister] Mary Scott 3rd Countess Buccleuch [aged 13] died. Her sister Anne [aged 10] succeeded 4th Countess Buccleuch.

On 4th April 1661 Alexander Leslie 1st Earl Leven [aged 81] died. His grandson [her half-brother] Alexander [aged 23] succeeded 2nd Earl Leven. [her sister-in-law] Margaret Howard Countess Leven [aged 26] by marriage Countess Leven.

On 20th April 1663 [her brother-in-law] James Scott 1st Duke Monmouth 1st Duke Buccleuch [aged 14] and [her half-sister] Anne Scott Duchess Monmouth and Buccleuch [aged 12] were married. She by marriage Duchess Monmouth. She the daughter of Francis Scott 2nd Earl Buccleuch and [her mother] Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 42]. He the illegitmate son of King Charles II of England Scotland and Ireland [aged 32] and Lucy Walter. They were fifth cousins.

On 15th July 1664 [her half-brother] Alexander Leslie 2nd Earl Leven [aged 27] died.

On 28th March 1672 James Wemyss 1st Lord Burntisland [aged 15] and Margaret Wemyss Countess Cromartie 3rd Countess Wemyss [aged 13] were married. She the daughter of David Wemyss 2nd Earl of Wemyss [aged 61] and Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 51].

Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke

Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.

He married (1) 13th August 1697 his third cousin once removed Anne Douglas, daughter of William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry and Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry, and had issue (2) 5th January 1709 Mary Robinson (3) July 1716 Elizabeth St Clair and had issue.

In July 1679 [her father] David Wemyss 2nd Earl of Wemyss [aged 68] died at Wemyss Castle. His daughter Margaret [aged 20] succeeded 3rd Countess Wemyss. [her husband] James Wemyss 1st Lord Burntisland [aged 22] by marriage Earl Wemyss.

After 28th February 1681 [her brother-in-law] Charles Cornwallis 3rd Baron Cornwallis [aged 25] and [her half-sister] Anne Scott Duchess Monmouth and Buccleuch [aged 30] were married. She the daughter of Francis Scott 2nd Earl Buccleuch and [her mother] Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 60].

In December 1682 [her husband] James Wemyss 1st Lord Burntisland [aged 25] died.

After December 1682 George Mackenzie 1st Earl Cromartie [aged 52] and Margaret Wemyss Countess Cromartie 3rd Countess Wemyss [aged 23] were married. The difference in their ages was 29 years. She the daughter of David Wemyss 2nd Earl of Wemyss and Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 62].

In 1685 [her step-son] John Mackenzie 2nd Earl Cromartie [aged 29] and Elizabeth Gordon Countess Cromartie were married. She the daughter of Charles Gordon 1st Earl Aboyne. He the son of [her husband] George Mackenzie 1st Earl Cromartie [aged 55] and Anna Sinclair.

In February 1688 [her mother] Margaret Leslie Countess Buccleuch and Wemyss [aged 67] died.

On 13th August 1697 David Wemyss 4th Earl of Wemyss [aged 19] and Anne Douglas were married. She the daughter of William Douglas 1st Duke Queensberry and Isabel Douglas Countess Queensberry. In 1702 [her daughter] Anne Wemyss died.

On 1st January 1703 [her husband] George Mackenzie 1st Earl Cromartie [aged 73] was created 1st Earl Cromartie. Margaret Wemyss Countess Cromartie 3rd Countess Wemyss [aged 44] by marriage Countess Cromartie.

The History of William Marshal was commissioned by his son shortly after William’s death in 1219 to celebrate the Marshal’s remarkable life; it is an authentic, contemporary voice. The manuscript was discovered in 1861 by French historian Paul Meyer. Meyer published the manuscript in its original Anglo-French in 1891 in two books. This book is a line by line translation of the first of Meyer’s books; lines 1-10152. Book 1 of the History begins in 1139 and ends in 1194. It describes the events of the Anarchy, the role of William’s father John, John’s marriages, William’s childhood, his role as a hostage at the siege of Newbury, his injury and imprisonment in Poitou where he met Eleanor of Aquitaine and his life as a knight errant. It continues with the accusation against him of an improper relationship with Margaret, wife of Henry the Young King, his exile, and return, the death of Henry the Young King, the rebellion of Richard, the future King Richard I, war with France, the death of King Henry II, and the capture of King Richard, and the rebellion of John, the future King John. It ends with the release of King Richard and the death of John Marshal.
