Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

Around 1425 Elizabeth Dunbar 5th Countess Moray was born to James Dunbar 4th Earl of Moray [aged 25] and Janet Seton [aged 24].

Before 1429 [her grandfather] [her father] Thomas Dunbar 3rd Earl of Moray died. His son James [aged 28] succeeded 4th Earl Moray.

On 10th August 1430 [her father] James Dunbar 4th Earl of Moray [aged 30] died. His daughter Elizabeth [aged 5] succeeded 5th Countess Moray.

Around 1445 Archibald Douglas Earl of Moray [aged 19] and Elizabeth Dunbar 5th Countess Moray [aged 20] were married. He by marriage Earl Moray. She the daughter of James Dunbar 4th Earl of Moray and Janet Seton [aged 44]. He the son of James "Gross" Douglas 7th Earl Douglas 1st Earl Avondale and Beatrix Sinclair Countess Douglas and Avondale [aged 47]. They were half third cousin once removed.

Before 22nd February 1452 [her brother-in-law] William Douglas 8th Earl Douglas 2nd Earl Avondale [aged 27] and Margaret "Fair Lady of Galloway" Douglas Countess [aged 17] were married. She would later marry his younger brother James Douglas 9th Earl Douglas 3rd Earl Avondale [aged 26]; an example of Married to Two Siblings. She the daughter of Archibald Douglas 2nd Duke Touraine and Euphemia Graham Lady Hamilton [aged 44]. He the son of James "Gross" Douglas 7th Earl Douglas 1st Earl Avondale and Beatrix Sinclair Countess Douglas and Avondale [aged 54]. They were first cousin once removed.

On 22nd February 1452 [her brother-in-law] William Douglas 8th Earl Douglas 2nd Earl Avondale [aged 27] was murdered by King James II of Scotland [aged 21] at Edinburgh Castle [Map] for refusing to desist from conspiring with Alexander Lindsay 4th Earl Crawford [aged 29]. His brother James [aged 26] succeeded 9th Earl Douglas, 3rd Earl Avondale.

Before 1455 [her brother-in-law] James Douglas 9th Earl Douglas 3rd Earl Avondale [aged 28] and Margaret "Fair Lady of Galloway" Douglas Countess [aged 19] were married. She by marriage Countess Douglas, Countess Avondale. She had previously married his brother William Douglas 8th Earl Douglas 2nd Earl Avondale; an example of Married to Two Siblings. She the daughter of Archibald Douglas 2nd Duke Touraine and Euphemia Graham Lady Hamilton [aged 46]. He the son of James "Gross" Douglas 7th Earl Douglas 1st Earl Avondale and Beatrix Sinclair Countess Douglas and Avondale [aged 56]. They were first cousin once removed.

On 1st May 1455 the Douglas rebellion was brought to an end at the Battle of Arkinholm near Langholm. [her husband] [her brother-in-law] Archibald Douglas Earl of Moray [aged 29] was killed. Hugh Douglas 1st Earl Ormonde was executed. John Douglas [aged 22] escaped.

On 20th May 1455 George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley and Elizabeth Dunbar 5th Countess Moray [aged 30] were married. The difference in their ages was 30 years; she, unusually, being older than him. She the daughter of James Dunbar 4th Earl of Moray and Janet Seton [aged 54]. He the son of Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley [aged 45] and Elizabeth Crichton Countess Huntley [aged 45]. They were first cousins.

In 1458 [her husband] George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 2] and Anabella Stewart [aged 22] were married. She the daughter of King James I of Scotland and Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. He the son of [her uncle] Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley [aged 48] and [her mother-in-law] Elizabeth Crichton Countess Huntley [aged 47].

Before March 1460 George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 4] and Elizabeth Dunbar 5th Countess Moray [aged 35] marriage annulled due to affinity; they were first cousins once-removed.

On 15th November 1461 Nicholas Hay 2nd Earl Erroll [aged 25] and [her former sister-in-law] Elizabeth Gordon Countess Erroll were married. She by marriage Countess Erroll. She the daughter of [her uncle] Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley [aged 51]. He the son of William Hay 1st Earl Erroll [aged 38] and Beatrice Douglas Countess Erroll.

Around 1469 John Kennedy 2nd Lord Kennedy [aged 14] and [her former sister-in-law] Elizabeth Gordon Countess Erroll were married. She the daughter of [her uncle] Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley [aged 59].

On 15th July 1470 [her uncle] Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley [aged 60] died. His son [her former husband] George [aged 15] succeeded 2nd Earl Huntley. Anabella Stewart [aged 34] by marriage Countess Huntley.

On 24th July 1471 the marriage of [her former husband] George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 16] and Anabella Stewart [aged 35] was annulled due to affinity.

On 18th August 1471 [her former husband] George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 16] and Elizabeth Hay Countess Huntley [aged 21] were married; she having been his mistress. She by marriage Countess Huntley. She the daughter of William Hay 1st Earl Erroll and Beatrice Douglas Countess Erroll. He the son of [her uncle] Alexander Gordon 1st Earl Huntley and [her former mother-in-law] Elizabeth Crichton Countess Huntley [aged 61].

On 9th June 1479 [her mother] Janet Seton [aged 78] died.

Before 17th February 1486 Elizabeth Dunbar 5th Countess Moray [aged 61] died.

On 8th June 1501 [her former husband] George Gordon 2nd Earl Huntley [aged 46] died. His son Alexander succeeded 3rd Earl Huntley. Jean Stewart Countess Huntley [aged 40] by marriage Countess Huntley.
