Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes
Récits d’un bourgeois de Valenciennes aka The Chronicle of a Bourgeois of Valenciennes is a vivid 14th-century vernacular chronicle written by an anonymous urban chronicler from Valenciennes in the County of Hainaut. It survives in a manuscript that describes local and regional history from about 1253 to 1366, blending chronology, narrative episodes, and eyewitness-style accounts of political, military, and social events in medieval France, Flanders, and the Low Countries. The work begins with a chronological framework of events affecting Valenciennes and its region under rulers such as King Philip VI of France and the shifting allegiances of local nobility. It includes accounts of conflicts, sieges, diplomatic manoeuvres, and the impact of broader struggles like the Hundred Years’ War on urban life in Hainaut. Written from the perspective of a burgher (bourgeois) rather than a monastery or royal court, the chronicle offers a rare lay viewpoint on high politics and warfare, reflecting how merchants, townspeople, and civic institutions experienced the turbulence of the 13th and 14th centuries. Its narrative style combines straightforward reporting of events with moral and civic observations, making it a valuable source for readers interested in medieval urban society, regional politics, and the lived experience of war and governance in pre-modern Europe.

John Evelyn's Diary. 29th December 1659. Came my Lord Count Arundel, of Wardour [aged 51], to visit me. I went also to see my Lord Viscount Montague [aged 49].
In or before 1661 [his son] Thomas Arundell 4th Baron Arundel [aged 27] and [his daughter-in-law] Margaret Spencer Baroness Arundel Wardour [aged 33] were married. She by marriage Baroness Arundel of Wardour in Wiltshire. They were second cousin once removed.
John Evelyn's Diary. 9th June 1664. Sir Samuel Tuke [aged 49] being this morning married to a lady, kinswoman to my Lord Arundel of Wardour [aged 56], by the Queen's Lord Almoner, L. Aubigny [aged 44] in St. James's chapel, solemnized his wedding night at my house with much company.
John Evelyn's Diary. 17th May 1671. Dined at Mr. Treasurer's [aged 40] with the Earl of Arlington [aged 53], Carlingford, Lord Arundel of Wardour [aged 63], Lord Almoner to the Queen, a French Count and two abbots, with several more of French nobility; and now by something I had lately observed of Mr. Treasurer's conversation on occasion, I suspected him a little warping to Rome.
John Evelyn's Diary. 19th August 1671. I dined at the Hamburg Resident's, and, after dinner, went to the christening of Sir Samuel Tuke's [aged 56] son, Charles, at Somerset House, by a Popish priest, and many odd ceremonies. The godfathers were the King [aged 41], and Lord Arundel of Wardour [aged 63], and godmother, the Countess of Huntingdon [aged 58]. [Note. This must refer to the Dowager Countess of Huntingdon wife of Ferdinando Hastings 6th Earl Huntingdon since his successor Theophilus Hastings 7th Earl Huntingdon [aged 20] didn't marry until 1672.].
On or after 10th February 1675 [his son] Henry Arundell [aged 41] and [his daughter-in-law] Mary Scrope [aged 41] were married.
On 24th March 1676 [his wife] Cicely Compton Baroness Arundel Wardour [aged 66] died.
John Evelyn's Diary. 10th March 1687. His Majesty [aged 53] sent for the Commissioners of the Privy Seal this morning into his bedchamber, and told us that though he had thought fit to dispose of the Seal into a single hand, yet he would so provide for us, as it should appear how well he accepted our faithful and loyal service with many gracious expressions to this effect; upon which we delivered the Seal into his hands. It was by all the world both hoped and expected, that he would have restored it to my Lord Clarendon; but they were astonished to see it given to Lord Arundel, of Wardour [aged 79], a zealous Roman Catholic. Indeed it was very hard, and looked very unkindly, his Majesty (as my Lord Clarendon protested to me, on my going to visit him and long discoursing with him about the affairs of Ireland) finding not the least failure of duty in him during his government of that kingdom, so that his recall plainly appeared to be from the stronger influence of the Papists, who now got all the preferments.
On 28th December 1694 Henry Arundell 3rd Baron Arundel [aged 86] died. His son Thomas [aged 61] succeeded 4th Baron Arundel of Wardour in Wiltshire.
[his daughter] Cicely Arundell was born to Henry Arundell 3rd Baron Arundel and Cicely Compton Baroness Arundel Wardour.
William of Worcester's Chronicle of England
William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.
