In 1536, two weeks after the execution of Anne Boleyn, her brother George and four others, Lancelot du Carle, wrote an extraordinary letter that described Anne's life, and her trial and execution, to which he was a witness. This book presents a new translation of that letter, with additional material from other contemporary sources such as Letters, Hall's and Wriothesley's Chronicles, the pamphlets of Wynkyn the Worde, the Memorial of George Constantyne, the Portuguese Letter and the Baga de Secrets, all of which are provided in Appendices.

On 24th February 1837 Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale was born to Henry Reveley Mitford [aged 33] and Georgiana Jemima Ashburnham [aged 31].
On 31st December 1874 Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 37] and Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 20] were married.
On 14th December 1876 [his son] Clement Freeman-Mitford was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 39] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 22]. The second of nine children. He married 25th November 1909 his first cousin Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy, daughter of David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie.
On 13th March 1878 [his son] David Freeman-Mitford 2nd Baron Redesdale was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 41] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 23]. He married February 1904 Sydney Bowles Baroness Redesdale and had issue.
In 1880 [his son] Bertram Freeman-Mitford 3rd Baron Redesdale was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 42] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 25].
On 25th September 1881 [his father-in-law] David Ogilvy 10th Earl of Airlie [aged 55] died. His son [his brother-in-law] David [aged 25] succeeded 11th Earl Airlie.
In May 1882 [his mother] Georgiana Jemima Ashburnham [aged 76] died.
In 1883 [his father] Henry Reveley Mitford [aged 79] died.

In 1885 [his son] John Freeman-Mitford 4th Baron Redesdale was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 47] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 30].
On 1st April 1885 Clementine Hozier was born to Henry Montague Hozier [aged 47] and [his sister-in-law] Henrietta Blanche Ogilvy [aged 32]. There is speculation she may have been fathered by Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 48] who was believed to be having an affair with Henrietta Blanche Ogilvy sister of his wife Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 30]. She married 12th September 1908 Winston Churchill and had issue.
On 19th January 1886 [his brother-in-law] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie [aged 29] and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 19] were married at St George's Church, Hanover Square. She the daughter of Arthur Saunders Gore 5th Earl Arran [aged 47] and Edith Jocelyn.
In 1895 [his daughter] Daphne Mitford Baroness Denham was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 57] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 40]. She married 27th February 1919 George Bowyer 1st Baron Denham and had issue.
In 1895 [his son] Ernest Freeman-Mitford was born to Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 57] and [his wife] Clementina Gertrude Helen Ogilvy [aged 40].
On 11th June 1900 [his brother-in-law] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie [aged 44] died. His son David [aged 6] succeeded 12th Earl Airlie.

The King has been pleased to direct Letters Patent to be passed under the Great Seal of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, granting the dignity of a Baron of the said United Kingdom unto Algernon Bertram Freeman Mitford [aged 65], Esqure, CVO, CB, and the heirs male of his body lawfully begotten, by the name, style, and title of was Baron Redesdale, of Redesdale, in the county of Northumberland.
In February 1904 [his son] David Freeman-Mitford 2nd Baron Redesdale [aged 25] and [his daughter-in-law] Sydney Bowles Baroness Redesdale [aged 24] were married.
On 25th November 1909 [his son] Clement Freeman-Mitford [aged 32] and [his daughter-in-law] Helen Alice Wyllington Ogilvy [aged 19] were married at the Private Chapel, Cortachy Castle, Angus. They had two daughters, Rosemary and Clementine who both died in 2005. She the daughter of [his brother-in-law] David Ogilvy 11th Earl of Airlie and Mabell Gore Countess Airlie [aged 43]. They were first cousins.
On 13th May 1915 [his son] Clement Freeman-Mitford [aged 38] was killed in action at the Battle of Loos. He was buried at Grave Reference: I. E. 8., Vlamertinghe Military Cemetery, Vlamertinghe, Arrondissement Ieper, West Flanders, Belgium. The wrought iron gates at the cemetery were presented in his memory by the family of the late Algernon Bertram Freeman-Mitford [aged 78], Lord Redesdale and [his wife] Clementina [aged 60], Lady Redesdale.
On 17th August 1916 Algernon Freeman-Mitford 1st Baron Redesdale [aged 79] died. His son David [aged 38] succeeded 2nd Baron Redesdale of Redesdale in Northumberland. Sydney Bowles Baroness Redesdale [aged 36] by marriage Baroness Redesdale of Redesdale in Northumberland.
Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans
Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.
