Jean de Waurin's Chronicle of England Volume 6 Books 3-6: The Wars of the Roses

Jean de Waurin was a French Chronicler, from the Artois region, who was born around 1400, and died around 1474. Waurin’s Chronicle of England, Volume 6, covering the period 1450 to 1471, from which we have selected and translated Chapters relating to the Wars of the Roses, provides a vivid, original, contemporary description of key events some of which he witnessed first-hand, some of which he was told by the key people involved with whom Waurin had a personal relationship.

George aka William Lumley was born to John Lumley 4th Baron Lumley and Joan Scrope Baroness Lumley. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward IV of England.

On 20th May 1510 [his grandfather] Richard Lumley 3rd Baron Lumley [aged 33] died. His son [his father] John [aged 18] succeeded 4th Baron Lumley.

In or before 1533 George aka William Lumley and Jane Knightley [aged 44] were married.

Around 1533 [his son] John Lumley 1st Baron Lumley was born to George aka William Lumley and [his wife] Jane Knightley [aged 45]. He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward IV of England. He married 1552 his third cousin once removed Jane Fitzalan Baroness Lumley, daughter of Henry Fitzalan 12th or 19th Earl of Arundel and Katherine Grey.

Bigod's Rebellion

On 12th July 1537 Robert Aske [aged 37] was hanged in chains at Clifford's Tower. The date may have been Friday 06 Jul as implied by the letters of the Duke of Norfolk?

George aka William Lumley and Nicholas Tempest [aged 57] were hanged at Tyburn [Map].

Chronicle of Edward Hall [1496-1548]. December 1536. Also in the latter end of this yere, the lord Darcy [aged 69], Aske [aged 36], Sir Robert constable [aged 58], Sir Jhon Bulmer and his wyfe [aged 25], Sir Thomas Percie [aged 32] brother to the Erle of Northumberland [aged 34], Syr Stephen Hamelton, Nicholas Tempest [aged 56] Esquire, William Lumley, son to the [his father] lord Lumley [aged 44] began again to conspire, although they before had every one of them their pardons, and now they were all taken and brought to the Tower of London [Map].

Chronicle of Edward Hall [1496-1548]. 2nd June 1537 In June the lord Darcy [aged 70] and the lord Hosey [Map] were arraigned at Westminster before the Marques of Exceter [aged 41], then High Steward of England, and they were both found guilty and had their judgement as in cases of high treason.

After 2nd June 1537. Shortly after were also arraigned Sir Robert Constable [aged 59], Sir Thomas Percy [deceased], Sir Fraunces Bygod [deceased], Sir Stephin Hamelton, Sir Jhon Bulmer and his wife [deceased], which some reported was not his wife but his paramour, also William Lumley, Nicholas Tempest [aged 57], and the Abbots of Jerney [deceased] and Rivers, and Robert Aske [aged 37], and all found guilty of high treason, and all put to death at Tiborne [Map], saving Sir Robert Constable, which was hanged in chains on Beverley gate at Hull and Aske was also hanged in chains in Yorke on a Tower, and Sir John Bulmer's Paramour, was burned in Smithfclde [Map] in London. And in the latter end of June, was the Lord Darcy beheaded at Tower Hill [Map], and shortly after was the Lord Hosey beheaded at Lyncolne [Map].

Chronicle of Greyfriars. 2nd June 1537. Also the 2nd day of June was drawn from the Tower of London to Tyborne Sir Thomas Percy [aged 33], sir Frances Bigod [aged 29], George Lumley heir to the [his father] Lord Lumley [aged 45], William Wood prior of Bridlington, Adam Sedbar [aged 35] abbott of Jervaulx [Map], and they were hanged, headed, and quartered, save sir Thomas Percy for he was but headed and was buried at the Cross Friars [Map], and the quarters of all the residee was buried at the Gray Friars in the cloister on the North side in the pamet [pavement?].

Before 1537 [his father] John Lumley 4th Baron Lumley [aged 44] and [his mother] Joan Scrope Baroness Lumley were married. She by marriage Baroness Lumley. They were third cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Edward IV of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

In 1545 [his father] John Lumley 4th Baron Lumley [aged 53] died. He was buried at Guisborough Priory [Map]. Baron Lumley forfeit since his son George aka William Lumley was been executed eight years previously and whose attainder (presuming there was one) prevented his grandson John Lumley [aged 12] from succeeding to the title. His grandson John Lumley 1st Baron Lumley was created Baron Lumley of the third creation in 1547.
