On 22nd September 1428 Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 36] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Portugal. She the daughter of Ferdinand I King Aragon and Eleanor of Alberquerque Queen Consort Aragon [aged 54]. He the son of King John I of Portugal [aged 76] and Philippa of Lancaster Queen Consort Portugal. They were first cousin once removed. He a great grandson of King Edward III of England.
In October 1429 [her son] John Aviz was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 37] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. He died aged three in 1433.
On 27th November 1430 [her daughter] Philippa Aviz was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 39] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. She died aged eight in 1439.
On 15th January 1432 [her son] Alfonso "The African" V King Portugal was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 40] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. He married (1) 1447 his first cousin Isabella Aviz Queen Consort Portugal and had issue (2) 1475 his niece Joanna "La Beltraneja" Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal, daughter of Henry IV King Castile and Joan Aviz Queen Consort Castile.
On 7th December 1432 [her daughter] Maria Aviz was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 41] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. She died aged less than one years old.
On 17th November 1433 [her son] Ferdinand Aviz 2nd Duke Viseu was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 42] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. He married 1447 his first cousin Beatrice Aviz Duchess Viseu and had issue.
On 18th September 1434 [her daughter] Eleanor Aviz Holy Roman Empress was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 42] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. She married 16th March 1452 Frederick "Peaceful or Fat" Habsburg III Holy Roman Emperor, son of Ernest "The Iron" Habsburg I Duke Austria and Cymburgis Masovia Duchess Austria, and had issue.
On 12th July 1435 [her son] Edward Aviz was born to [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 43] and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. He died aged less than one years old.
This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

On 13th September 1438 [her husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal [aged 46] died. His son Alfonso [aged 6] succeeded V King Portugal.
On 31st March 1439 [her daughter] Joan Aviz Queen Consort Castile was born to [her former husband] Edward "The Philosopher" I King Portugal and Eleanor Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal. She a great x 2 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 4.40%. She married 1455 her first cousin Henry IV King Castile, son of John II King Castile and Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Castile, and had issue.
