Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile 1334-1379

On 13th January 1334 Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile was born illegitimately to Alfonso "Avenger" XI King Castile [aged 22] and Eleanor Guzman. He was one of twins.

Around July 1353 [his half-brother] Peter "Cruel" I King Castile [aged 18] and [his sister-in-law] Blanche Bourbon Queen Consort Castile [aged 14] were married. She by marriage Queen Consort Castile. She the daughter of Peter Bourbon Duke Bourbon [aged 42] and Isabella Valois Duchess Bourbon [aged 40]. He the son of [his father] Alfonso "Avenger" XI King Castile and Maria Burgundy Queen Consort Castile [aged 40]. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

On 29th May 1358 [his illegitimate brother] Fadrique Alfonso Ivrea [aged 24] was murdered at Seville on behalf of his brother [his half-brother] Peter "Cruel" I King Castile [aged 23].

Before 24th August 1358 Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 24] and Juana Manuel Queen of Castile [aged 19] were married. He the illegitmate son of Alfonso "Avenger" XI King Castile and Eleanor Guzman. They were third cousins. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 24th August 1358 [his son] John I King Castile was born to Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 24] and Juana Manuel Queen of Castile [aged 19]. He married before 4th October 1379 his third cousin once removed Eleanor Barcelona Queen Consort Castile, daughter of Peter IV King Aragon and Eleanor of Sicily Queen Consort Aragon, and had issue.

In 1360 [his illegitimate son] Fadrique de Castilla Duke of Benavente was born illegitimately to Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 25] and Beatriz Ponce de León y Jérica.

After 1363 [his daughter] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort Navarre was born to Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 28] and Juana Manuel Queen of Castile [aged 24]. She married 1375 her fourth cousin Charles III King Navarre, son of Charles "Bad" II King Navarre and Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre, and had issue.

In 1367 [his daughter] Joanna Trastámara was born to Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 32] and Juana Manuel Queen of Castile [aged 28]. She died aged seven in 1374.

In 1374 [his daughter] Joanna Trastámara [aged 7] died.

In 1375 [his son-in-law] Charles III King Navarre [aged 14] and Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort Navarre [aged 11] were married. She the daughter of Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 40] and Juana Manuel Queen of Castile [aged 36]. He the son of Charles "Bad" II King Navarre [aged 42] and Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre. They were fourth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry "Curtmantle" II of England.

On 29th May 1379 Henry "Fratricide" II King Castile [aged 45] died. His son John [aged 20] succeeded I King Castile.

After the envoys had withdrawn, the embassy was not well received, since it proposed the dissolution of the ancient alliance, friendship, and association, especially as no injury from the French toward the Hungarians had preceded it, and because the king of Spain seemed ungrateful and forgetful of the benefits of the French, by whose aid his father had obtained the royal throne¹. Therefore, when the appointed day for the conference had been set and the envoys returned, the duke of Anjou, acting as regent, a man renowned for eloquence, spoke in the following terms.

Unde statuto die colloquii, legatis redeuntibus, dominus Andegavensis dux regens, vir eloquencia clarus, verba in hanc sentenciam fecit:

Note 1. Henry of Trastámara had conquered the throne of Castile from his half-brother King Peter the Cruel in 1366, with the assistance sent to him by King Charles V under the command of Du Guesclin. His initial reign was brief, being defeated at the Battle of Nájera, where King Peter was assisted by Edward, the Black Prince. He regained the crown after the victory at the Battle of Montiel in 1369, after which he murdered, apparently by his own hand, his King Peter for which action he attracted the epithet 'Fratricide'.
