Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway 1564-1631

In 1562 [his father] John Conway of Arrow [aged 27] and [his mother] Helen Greville [aged 23] were married at Compton Verney, Warwickshire.

Around 1564 Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway was born to John Conway of Arrow [aged 29] and Helen Greville [aged 25].

On or before 10th August 1594 [his son] Edward Conway 2nd Viscount Conway was born to Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 30]. He was baptised on 10 Aug 1594 at Arrow, Warwickshire. He married 1621 Frances Popham Viscountess Conway and had issue.

On 13th June 1596 Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex [aged 30] departed from Plymouth, Devon [Map] with a fleet of 150 English and Dutch ships divided into four squads with 6,360 private soldiers, 1,000 English volunteers, and 6,772 sailors.

Charles Howard 1st Earl Nottingham [aged 60] was admiral in command. Robert Devereux 2nd Earl Essex commanded the land forces. Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 32] commanded a foot Regiment.

Thomas Howard 1st Earl Suffolk [aged 34], Walter Raleigh [aged 42], Francis de Vere [aged 35] each commanded a squadron.

Anthony Ashley 1st Baronet [aged 35] represented Queen Elizabeth [aged 62].

Toby Caulfeild 1st Baron Caulfeild [aged 30] was present.

In 1598 [his daughter] Brilliana Conway was born to Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 34] at Brill where her father was Governor. She married 6th November 1656 Robert Harley and had issue.

On 4th October 1603 [his father] John Conway of Arrow [aged 68] died.

In 1621 [his son] Edward Conway 2nd Viscount Conway [aged 26] and [his daughter-in-law] Frances Popham Viscountess Conway [aged 24] were married.

Around 1625 Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 61] was created 1st Baron Conway of Ragley in Warwickshire.

In 1627 Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 63] was created 1st Viscount Conway of Conway Castle.

On 3rd January 1631 Edward Conway 1st Viscount Conway [aged 67] died in St Martin's Lane. His son Edward [aged 36] succeeded 2nd Viscount Conway of Conway Castle. Frances Popham Viscountess Conway [aged 34] by marriage Viscountess Conway of Conway Castle.

Abbot John Whethamstede’s Chronicle of the Abbey of St Albans

Abbot John Whethamstede's Register aka Chronicle of his second term at the Abbey of St Albans, 1451-1461, is a remarkable text that describes his first-hand experience of the beginning of the Wars of the Roses including the First and Second Battles of St Albans, 1455 and 1461, respectively, their cause, and their consequences, not least on the Abbey itself. His text also includes Loveday, Blore Heath, Northampton, the Act of Accord, Wakefield, and Towton, and ends with the Coronation of King Edward IV. In addition to the events of the Wars of the Roses, Abbot John, or his scribes who wrote the Chronicle, include details in the life of the Abbey such as charters, letters, land exchanges, visits by legates, and disputes, which provide a rich insight into the day-to-day life of the Abbey, and the challenges faced by its Abbot.
