The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Before 19th June 1399 [her brother-in-law] Edward Charleton 5th Baron Cherleton (age 29) and [her sister] Eleanor Holland Countess March and Ulster (age 28) were married. Abdication of Richard II

On 30th September 1399 [her brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 32) became King of England usurping the throne of his cousin [her uncle] Richard II (age 32) and Richard's heir, the seven year old [her nephew] Edmund Mortimer 5th Earl of March (age 7) who was descended from Edward III's second son Lionel of Antwerp Duke of Clarence. This second usurption was to have far reaching consequences since it subsequently became the descent by which the House of York claimed precedence over the House of Lancaster being one of the causes of the Wars of the Roses.

Ralph Neville 1st Earl of Westmoreland (age 35) was appointed Earl Marshal.

Coronation of Henry IV

On 13th October 1399 [her brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 32) was crowned IV King of England at Westminster Abbey [Map]. Earl Derby, Earl Lancaster, Duke Lancaster and Earl of Leicester merged with the Crown. [her uncle] Archbishop Thomas Fitzalan aka Arundel (age 46) officiated. Bishop Robert Braybrooke carried the sacraments and said mass.

The future [her future brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 13) carried the Sword Curtana. Thomas Beauchamp 12th Earl Warwick (age 61) and/or [her husband] John Beaufort 1st Marquess Somerset and Dorset (age 26) carried a sword wrapped in red and bound with golden straps symbolising two-fold mercy. Henry Percy 1st Earl of Northumberland (age 57) carried the Lancaster Sword.

Thomas Percy 1st Earl of Worcester (age 56) carried the Steward's baton. Thomas Erpingham (age 44) carried a Sword.

Edmund Stafford 5th Earl Stafford (age 21) was appointed Knight of the Bath. [her future brother-in-law] John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford (age 10), John Arundell (age 33) and Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick (age 17) were knighted.

Marriage of Henry IV and Joanna of Navarre

On 7th February 1403 [her brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 35) and Joanna of Navarre Queen Consort England (age 33) were married at Winchester, Hampshire [Map]. His third marriage, her second. She had eight children with her first husband but, despite ten years of marriage, none with Henry. She the daughter of Charles "Bad" II King Navarre and Joan Valois Queen Consort Navarre. He the son of [her father-in-law] John of Gaunt 1st Duke Lancaster and Blanche Duchess of Lancaster. They were third cousins. He a grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

Battle of Shrewsbury

On 21st July 1403 [her brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 36), with his son the future [her future brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 16), defeated the rebel army of Henry "Hotspur" Percy (age 39) at the Battle of Shrewsbury at the site now known as Battlefield, Shrewsbury [Map]. King Henry V of England took an arrow to the side of his face. John Stanley (age 53) was wounded in the throat. Thomas Strickland (age 36) fought and was awarded £38 and two of the rebel Henry's horses. Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick (age 21) fought for the King. Walter Blount (age 55), the King's Standard Bearer, was killed by Archibald Douglas 1st Duke Touraine (age 31).

Thomas Wendesley (age 59), Edmund Cockayne (age 47) and Robert Goushill were killed.

Edmund Stafford 5th Earl Stafford (age 25) was killed. His son Humphrey Stafford succeeded 6th Earl Stafford, 7th Baron Stafford.

Hugh Shirley (age 52) was killed; he was one of four knights dressed as King Henry IV of England.

Of the rebels, Henry "Hotspur" Percy, Madog Kynaston (age 43) and John Clifton were killed.

Thomas Percy 1st Earl of Worcester (age 60) was beheaded after the battle. Earl Worcester extinct.

Richard Vernon 11th Baron Shipbrook (age 48) was hanged. Baron Shipbrook forfeit.

John Rossall was killed. His sister Eleanor Rossall (age 26) inherited a half-share in the Rossall Shrewsbury [Map] estates.

John Massey (age 65) was killed.

Marriage of Edmund Holland Earl of Kent and Lucia Visconti

On 24th January 1407 [her brother] Edmund Holland 4th Earl Kent (age 23) and [her sister-in-law] Lucia Visconti Countess Kent (age 27) were married at Southwark Cathedral [Map]. She by marriage Countess Kent. He was killed eighteen month's later at the Battle of Île de Bréhat. He the son of [her father] Thomas Holland 2nd Earl Kent and [her mother] Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (age 57).

Battle of Île de Bréhat

On 15th September 1408 [her brother] Edmund Holland 4th Earl Kent (age 24) was killed at Île de Bréhat. He was buried in Bourne Abbey, Lincolnshire [Map]. Earl Kent extinct. Baron Holand, Baron Wake of Liddell abeyant. See Walsingham.

In 1409 [her daughter] Margaret Beaufort Countess Devon was born to [her husband] John Beaufort 1st Marquess Somerset and Dorset (age 36) and Margaret Holland Duchess Clarence (age 24) at Westminster Palace [Map]. She married 1420 her third cousin Thomas Courtenay 5th or 13th Earl Devon, son of Hugh Courtenay 4th or 12th Earl Devon and Anne Talbot Countess Devon, and had issue.

On 31st January 1410 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter (age 33) was appointed Chancellor of the Exchequer which position he held until 1411.

On 16th March 1410 [her husband] John Beaufort 1st Marquess Somerset and Dorset (age 37) died at Hospital of St Katharine's by the Tower, Tower Hill [Map]. He was buried at St Michael's Chapel, Canterbury Cathedral [Map]. His son [her son] Henry (age 9) succeeded 2nd Earl Somerset.

Death of King Henry IV Accession of Henry V

On 20th March 1413 [her former brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England (age 45) died in the Jerusalem Chamber, Cheyneygates, Westminster Abbey [Map] in Westminster Abbey confirming a prophesy that he would die in Jerusalem. His son [her brother-in-law] Henry (age 26) succeeded V King of England. His sons King Henry V of England and [her brother-in-law] Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester (age 22) were present. He was buried in the Chancel of Canterbury Cathedral [Map].

Coronation of Henry V

On 9th April 1413 [her brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 26) was crowned V King of England by [her uncle] Archbishop Thomas Fitzalan aka Arundel (age 60) at Westminster Abbey [Map]. Duke Lancaster merged with the Crown.

Richard Beauchamp 13th Earl Warwick (age 31) was appointed Lord High Steward. Henry Fitzhugh 3rd Baron Fitzhugh (age 55) was appointed Constable of England.

On 24th November 1413 [her brother-in-law] John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford (age 24) was created 1st Earl Richmond.

Henry V awards his brothers Dukedoms

On 16th May 1414 [her brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 27) created Dukedoms for his two brothers:

[her brother-in-law] Humphrey Lancaster 1st Duke Gloucester (age 23) was created 1st Duke Gloucester, 1st Earl Pembroke.

Battle of Agincourt

On 25th October 1415 [her brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 29) defeated a French army at the Battle of Agincourt.

The battle is described by three Chroniclers were present:

Jean de Waurin: "1, the author of this work, know the truth of the matter, for in that assembly I was among the French".

Jean le Fevre de St Remy: "I who write this, seated on a horse among the baggage at the rear of the battle, along with the other priests who were present".

The anonymous author of the Gesta Henrici Quinti i.e. Deeds of Henry V: "while I was on the other side with the English".

On 17th March 1416 [her mother] Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (age 66) died.

Before 27th April 1416 [her brother-in-law] Henry Bromflete 1st Baron Vesci (age 27) and [her sister] Joan Holland Duchess York (age 36) were married. She the daughter of [her father] Thomas Holland 2nd Earl Kent and [her mother] Alice Fitzalan Countess Kent (deceased). They were half fifth cousin once removed. On 18th November 1416 [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter (age 39) was created 1st Duke Exeter by [her brother-in-law] King Henry V of England (age 30) for the remainder of his natural life for 'his service to the king and the realm on both sides of the seas'. At the time the only other dukes were the King's brothers.

Siege of Rouen

On 29th July 1418 the English forces commenced the Siege of Rouen. Robert Willoughby 6th Baron Willoughby (age 33) fought. John Blount (age 30) died. William Harrington (age 45), the King's Standard Bearer, was wounded.

Marriage of Henry V and Catherine of Valois

On 2nd June 1420 [her brother-in-law] Henry V (age 33) and Catherine of Valois (age 18) were married at Troyes Cathedral [Map]. She the daughter of Charles "Beloved Mad" VI King France (age 51) and Isabeau Wittelsbach Queen Consort France (age 50). He the son of [her former brother-in-law] King Henry IV of England and Mary Bohun. They were half third cousin once removed. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry III of England.

Battle of Baugé

On 22nd March 1421 the Dauphin's (age 18) French army and a Scottish army heavily defeated the English army at the Battle of Baugé. On the French side Étienne Vignolles "La Hire" fought. On the Scottish side John Stewart 2nd Earl Buchan (age 40) and John Stewart of Darnley 1st Count Évreux (age 41) fought. William Douglas (age 37) was killed.

On the English side [her son] John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset (age 18), [her illegitimate brother-in-law] Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter (age 44), [her son] Thomas Beaufort Count Perche (age 16) and John Holland 2nd Duke Exeter (age 26) were captured. John Beaufort 1st Duke of Somerset would be captive for the next seventeen years. Thomas Beaufort 1st Duke Exeter was released in 1422. Thomas Beaufort Count Perche was released around 1427 in a prisoner exchange.

On 3rd October 1431 [her son] Thomas Beaufort Count Perche (age 26) was killed at Louviers, Eure, Haute Normandie during the Siege of Louviers.

In or before 1432 [her son] Edmund Beaufort 1st or 2nd Duke of Somerset (age 25) and [her daughter-in-law] Eleanor Beauchamp Duchess Somerset (age 23) were married.
