On 13th May 1650 [his father] Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 21] and [his mother] Mary Stewart Countess Argyll [aged 22] were married at Canongate Kirk, Canongate. She the daughter of [his grandfather] James Stewart 4th Earl of Moray [aged 39] and [his grandmother] Margaret Home Countess Moray. He the son of Archibald Campbell 1st Marquess Argyll [aged 43] and Margaret Douglas Marchioness Argyll [aged 40]. They were half second cousin once removed. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Henry VII of England and Ireland.

Around 1660 Captain James Campbell was born to Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 30] and Mary Stewart Countess Argyll [aged 32].

In October 1663 [his father] Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 34] succeeded 9th Earl Argyll. [his mother] Mary Stewart Countess Argyll [aged 35] by marriage Countess Argyll.

In May 1668 [his mother] Mary Stewart Countess Argyll [aged 40] died.

On 12th March 1678 [his brother] Archibald Campbell 1st Duke Argyll [aged 19] and [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Tollemache Duchess Argyll [aged 18] were married. She the daughter of Lionel Tollemache 3rd Baronet and Elizabeth Murray Duchess Lauderdale [aged 51]. He the son of [his father] Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 49] and [his mother] Mary Stewart Countess Argyll. They were sixth cousins.

Argyll's Rising

On 30th June 1685 [his father] Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll [aged 56] was beheaded on the Maiden (an early gullotine) in Edinburgh for his part in Argyll's Rising. His succeeded son [his brother] Archibald [aged 26] succeeded 10th Earl Argyll. [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Tollemache Duchess Argyll [aged 25] by marriage Countess Argyll.

On 10th November 1690 Captain James Campbell [aged 30] and Mary Wharton [aged 13] were married following his abduction of her. He the son of Archibald Campbell 9th Earl Argyll and Mary Stewart Countess Argyll.

Proceedings of the Old Bailey 1690. 10th December 1690. John Johnson [aged 42] Esq; alias Captain Johnson, alias sir John Johnson, William Clewer professor of Divinity, S - C - and Grace Wiggan, were tryed for Forcibly, Violently and Felloniously Taking Away, and against her Consent, Marrying [his wife] Mary Wharton [aged 13], a Virgin under the Age of 14 Years, to one James Cambel [aged 30], she being the sole Heiress of Philip Wharton Esq decesed, and possessed of £1500 per annum Estate; and £1000 in Money and Effects . Upon Tryal it appeared, That Mrs. Bierly, Gardioness to Mrs. Wharton, had carried her, as also her own Daughters, to the House of Mr. Archibald Montgomery in Greek-street at Soho, upon his inviting them to a Dinner, and that he purposely delayed them to stay Supper, so that they departed not till about 9 in the Evening, when in Long-acre they saw a Coach with six Horses pass them, as in much haste, and soon after found it to stand a little off their own Door in Queen street, where Mrs. Wharton allighting was violently seized and thrust into the Coach, crying out for Help, and the Footman running to take hold of her was knocked down and one of the Daughters of Mrs. Bierly thrown in the Channel and much bruised insomuch that the Coach, at the Word of Command, drove away into Holbourn, and so towards Tyburn, so swift that those who followed lost the sight of it, and about 10 of the Clock she was brought to Watson the Coachman's House in Westminster, where Captain Cambel had taken a Lodging some time before, and there they found Parson Clewer, Mrs. C - and her Maid, when Mrs. C - accosting her, in a perswading way, bid her not be concerned, for she was sure she would be very happy in Mr. Cambel for a Husband, &c. and after many Perswasions, the Lady sheding a great many Tears, Parson Clewer pulling out his Book read the Offices of Matrimony, and they spoke after him, the Coachman and his Wife having before been called up as Witnesses to the Marriage, and the Ring-lent by Mrs C - after which they had a Turkey, and a Neck of Mutton to supper but the young Lady refused to eat, saying, she had supped at Mr. Montgomerys, so she only drank a Glass of Wine and then her going to bed being proposed, she opposed it, and seemed very unwilling, till such Time as Mrs. C - said, she would be her Bed fellow but having undressed her, and got her in Captain Cambel came to bed to her, and then the rest came to give them Joy; the next day they dined at Puntacks a French Ordinary near Charing Cross after they had got her to write a Letter to her Aunt to bid her not to be concerned, for that she was with Captain James Cambel her Husband, and suddainly intended to wait on her, &c. At this Place it appeared by the Master of the House; she seemed discontented and from hence they removed her to an Apothecaries in Newgate-street, where she was discovered, and restored to her Friends; she utterly denied in Court that she ever gave any Consent, but what she was constrained to by Fear and Surprize, or that she had ever seen Captain Cambel before.

2 Will. & Mar. Sess. 2. c. 9 Pr. 20th December 1690. An Act to annul and make void a Marriage between [his wife] Mary Wharton [aged 13] an Infant and James Campbell [aged 30] Esquire.

John Evelyn's Diary. 20th December 1690. Dr. Hough [aged 39], President of Magdalen College, Oxford, who was displaced with several of the Fellows for not taking the oath imposed by King James, now made a Bishop. Most of this month cold and frost. One Johnson [aged 42], a Knight, was executed at Tyburn [Map] for being an accomplice with Campbell [aged 30], brother to Lord Argyle [aged 32], in stealing a young heiress [aged 13].1

Note 1. This execution occurred on the 23rd December 1690.

On 20th December 1690 Captain James Campbell [aged 30] and Mary Wharton [aged 13] marriage annulled by Act of Parliament following his trial at the Old Bailey at which he and John Johnston 3rd Baronet [aged 42] were found guilty of her abduction.

On 23rd December 1690 John Johnston 3rd Baronet [aged 42] was executed at Tyburn [Map] for having assisted Captain James Campbell [aged 30] in the abduction and forced marriage of [his former wife] Mary Wharton [aged 13]. See John Evelyn's Diary.

Anne Boleyn. Her Life as told by Lancelot de Carle's 1536 Letter.

In 1701 [his brother] Archibald Campbell 1st Duke Argyll [aged 42] was created 1st Duke Argyll. [his sister-in-law] Elizabeth Tollemache Duchess Argyll [aged 41] by marriage Duchess Argyll.

On 25th September 1703 [his brother] Archibald Campbell 1st Duke Argyll [aged 45] died. His succeeded son [his nephew] John [aged 22] succeeded 2nd Duke Argyll. Mary Duncombe Duchess of Argyll [aged 18] by marriage Duchess Argyll.

Around January 1713 Captain James Campbell [aged 53] died.

In 1726 [his former wife] Mary Wharton [aged 49] died.
