Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough

A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

Louis of Luxembourg was born to John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano and Margaret Brienne Countess of Brienne. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England.

Around 1387 [his father] John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano [aged 17] and [his mother] Margaret Brienne Countess of Brienne [aged 22] were married. He the son of [his grandfather] Guy of Luxembourg I Count Saint Pol and Ligny and [his grandmother] Mathilde Chatillon Countess Saint Pol.

In 1394 [his grandfather] Louis Count of Enghien died. His daughter [his mother] Margaret [aged 29] succeeded Countess Brienne. [his father] John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano [aged 24] by marriage Count Brienne.

In 1397 [his father] John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano [aged 27] died.

On 8th May 1405 Peter Luxembourg I Count Saint Pol [aged 15] and [his sister-in-law] Margherita Baux [aged 11] were married. She the daughter of Francesco Baux 1st Duke Andria [aged 75] and Sueva Orsini [aged 45]. He the son of [his father] John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano and [his mother] Margaret Brienne Countess of Brienne [aged 40]. They were sixth cousins. He a great x 4 grandson of King Henry III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King John of England.

On 12th April 1415 Waleran Luxembourg Count of Saint Pol and Ligny [aged 60] died. His nephew Peter [aged 25] succeeded Count Saint Pol.

Before 26th October 1415 Louis of Luxembourg was consecrated Bishop of Thérouanne.

On 26th October 1415, the day after the Battle of Agincourt, the Bishop of Thérouanne consecrated part of the battle ground as a grave-site for the fallen.

On 23rd November 1418 John Luxembourg II Count Ligny [aged 26] and [his sister-in-law] Jeanne de Béthune Viscountess Béthune [aged 21] were married. He the son of [his father] John Luxembourg II Count of Brienne and Conversano and [his mother] Margaret Brienne Countess of Brienne [aged 53].

On 31st August 1433 Peter Luxembourg I Count Saint Pol [aged 43] died of plague at Rambures, Somme. His son Louis [aged 15] succeeded I Count Saint Pol.

In 1435 Louis of Luxembourg fled to English held Rouen, France [Map] when the French recovered Paris. He was appointed Archbishop of Rouen. His niece Jacquetta of Luxembourg Duchess Bedford [aged 20] married the English regent John Lancaster 1st Duke Bedford [aged 45].

Around 1437 Louis of Luxembourg travelled to England where he was appointed Bishop of Ely.

And to that Parlyment come the Byschoppe of Tyrwynne [Thérouanne] ande the counselle of the Erle of Armanacke [aged 40].

In 1439 Louis of Luxembourg was appointed Cardinal by Pope Eugene IV [aged 56] at the request of the English.

On 5th January 1441 John Luxembourg II Count Ligny [aged 49] died at Guise, Aisne.

On 18th September 1443 Cardinal Louis of Luxembourg died.
