The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel Volume 1 Chapters 1-60 1307-1342
The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel offer one of the most vivid and immediate accounts of 14th-century Europe, written by a knight who lived through the events he describes, and experienced some of them first hand. Covering the early decades of the Hundred Years’ War, this remarkable chronicle follows the campaigns of Edward III of England, the politics of France and the Low Countries, and the shifting alliances that shaped medieval warfare. Unlike later historians, Jean le Bel writes with a strong sense of eyewitness authenticity, drawing on personal experience and the testimony of fellow soldiers. His narrative captures not only battles and sieges, but also the realities of military life, diplomacy, and the ideals of chivalry that governed noble society. A key source for Jean Froissart, Le Bel’s chronicle stands on its own as a compelling and insightful work, at once historical record and literary achievement. This translation builds on the 1905 edition published in French by Jules Viard, adding extensive translations from other sources Rymer's Fœdera, the Chronicles of Adam Murimuth, William Nangis, Walter of Guisborough, a Bourgeois of Valenciennes, Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke and Richard Lescot to enrich the original text and Viard's notes.

Annales Paulini. In the same year, two cardinals who had been sent by the lord pope to England to restore peace between the King of England and the Scots were robbed by the Northerners between Durham and Darlington. Sir Louis de Beaumont, at that time Bishop-elect of Durham, was likewise captured and imprisoned by the Northerners, together with his brother Sir Henry [aged 38]. At about the same time, the king, the Earl of Lancaster, and other magnates were at York negotiating concerning peace and concord.
On 9th February 1317 Bishop Louis de Beaumont was elected Bishop of Durham.
On 26th March 1318 Bishop Louis de Beaumont was consecrated Bishop of Durham.
Annales Paulini. In the same year, on the Sunday after the Annunciation [26th March 1318], Sir Louis, Bishop-elect of Durham, was consecrated at Westminster by Cardinals Gaucelin and Luca, without any prior announcement or proclamation having been made to the people.
Eodem anno, die Dominica in crastino Annuntiationis, dominus Lodowicus electus Dunolmiæ consecratus fuit apud Westmonasium per cardinales Gauselinum et Lucani, nulla prænuntiatione ad populum terium. prius facta vel proclamata.
On 24th September 1333 Bishop Louis de Beaumont died.
Annales Paulini. In this year, shortly before the feast of St Michael, the see of Durham became vacant through the death of Sir Louis de Beaumont [on 24th September 1333]. Soon after the feast of St Michael, the chapter of Durham elected a monk of that church named [Robert of Graystones] who was confirmed by the Archbishop of York and solemnly consecrated by that archbishop in York Minster, notwithstanding the report spreading throughout England that the pope had conferred the bishopric upon Sir Richard de Bury [aged 46], a clerk of the lord king, at the king’s request. The outcome subsequently proved this report to be true. For the said Sir Richard, shortly after the feast of the Nativity of the Lord, having obtained apostolic letters concerning his provision, caused himself to be consecrated by the Bishop of Winchester at Chertsey Abbey by apostolic authority. He also obtained from the lord king full delivery of the temporalities of the bishopric, which the king had previously refused to grant to the aforesaid monk. After this, the said monk, though elected and consecrated, returned to the cloister a bishop without a bishopric, and died shortly afterwards.
