Adam Murimuth's Continuation and Robert of Avesbury’s 'The Wonderful Deeds of King Edward III'
This volume brings together two of the most important contemporary chronicles for the reign of Edward III and the opening phases of the Hundred Years’ War. Written in Latin by English clerical observers, these texts provide a vivid and authoritative window into the political, diplomatic, and military history of fourteenth-century England and its continental ambitions. Adam Murimuth Continuatio's Chronicarum continues an earlier chronicle into the mid-fourteenth century, offering concise but valuable notices on royal policy, foreign relations, and ecclesiastical affairs. Its annalistic structure makes it especially useful for establishing chronology and tracing the development of events year by year. Complementing it, Robert of Avesbury’s De gestis mirabilibus regis Edwardi tertii is a rich documentary chronicle preserving letters, treaties, and official records alongside narrative passages. It is an indispensable source for understanding Edward III’s claim to the French crown, the conduct of war, and the mechanisms of medieval diplomacy. Together, these works offer scholars, students, and enthusiasts a reliable and unembellished account of a transformative period in English and European history. Essential for anyone interested in medieval chronicles, the Hundred Years’ War, or the reign of Edward III.

Paternal Family Tree: Fitzmaldred aka Neville
Maternal Family Tree: Elizabeth Wychingham 1410-1451
Baron Abergavenny is a complex Barony. When [her father] Henry Neville 6th and 4th Baron Abergavenny died in 1587 there was some confusion as to whether the Barony descended in the male and female lines ie heirs general, which is considered to be the valid line, or whether it was constrained to male onle. If the former then Henry's daughter Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer should have inherited, if the latter her cousin Edward Neville should have inherited. In the event Edward Neville and his descendants held the Barony, as well as the second creation Baron Abergavenny. If the claim of Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer was valid, she and her descendants, the Earls of Westmoreland, should have been the Barons of the 1st Creation.
In or before 1554 [her father] Henry Neville 6th and 4th Baron Abergavenny [aged 23] and [her mother] Frances Manners Baroness Bergavenny [aged 23] were married. She by marriage Baroness Abergavenny. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Thomas Manners 1st Earl of Rutland and [her grandmother] Eleanor Paston Countess Rutland. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. She a great x 5 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.
In 1554 Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer was born to Henry Neville 6th and 4th Baron Abergavenny [aged 24] and Frances Manners Baroness Bergavenny [aged 24].
Around 1564 [her future husband] Thomas Fane [aged 54] and Elizabeth Culpepper [aged 18] were married. The difference in their ages was 36 years.
On 12th December 1574 Thomas Fane [aged 64] and Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer [aged 20] were married at Birling, Kent [Map]. The difference in their ages was 44 years.
In September 1576 [her mother] Frances Manners Baroness Bergavenny [aged 46] died at Birling, Kent [Map].
On 1st February 1580 [her son] Francis Fane 1st Earl of Westmoreland was born to [her husband] Thomas Fane [aged 70] and Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer [aged 26]. He married 15th February 1598 Mary Mildmay Countess of Westmoreland and had issue.
In 1581 [her son] George Fane of Burston was born to [her husband] Thomas Fane [aged 71] and Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer [aged 27]. He married (1) September 1607 his fifth cousin once removed Elizabeth Spencer, daughter of Robert Spencer 1st Baron Spencer and Margaret Willoughby (2) after 19th November 1618 Anne Boteler and had issue.
On 10th February 1587 [her father] Henry Neville 6th and 4th Baron Abergavenny [aged 57] died. His daughter Mary [aged 33] succeeded 7th Baroness Abergavenny, 5th Baroness Abergavenny. The title was, however, was claimed by Edward Neville [aged 61] who was summoned to Parliament in 1604; this is now considered to be a new creation - see Baron Abergavenny. On the same day that Mary Neville 7th and 5th Baroness Abergavenny 3rd Baroness Despencer was restored to the Baron Despencer as compensaton for her loss if the Abergaveen Barony.
On 12th March 1589 [her husband] Thomas Fane [aged 79] died.
On 15th February 1598 [her son] Francis Fane 1st Earl of Westmoreland [aged 18] and [her daughter-in-law] Mary Mildmay Countess of Westmoreland [aged 16] were married.
Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke
Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson.
