William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

On 18th July 1501 [his daughter] Isabella of Austria Queen Consort Denmark and Norway was born to Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 22] and [his wife] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile [aged 22] at Brussels [Map]. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.88%. She married 1515 her third cousin Christian II King of Denmark II King Norway, son of John King of Denmark Norway and Sweden and Christina Queen Consort Denmark Norway and Sweden, and had issue.

On 14th November 1501 Arthur Prince of Wales [aged 15] and [his sister-in-law] Catherine of Aragon [aged 15] were married at St Paul's Cathedral [Map] by Archbishop Henry Deane assisted by William Warham Bishop of London [aged 51] and a further eighteen bishops. She wore a white satin dress with a farthingale and over her head wore a veil of fine silk trimmed with gold and pearls. She would, eight years later, marry his younger brother King Henry VIII of England and Ireland [aged 10] - see Marriage and Coronation of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] Ferdinand II King Aragon [aged 49] and [his mother-in-law] Isabella Queen Castile [aged 50]. He the son of King Henry VII of England and Ireland [aged 44] and Elizabeth York Queen Consort England [aged 35]. They were half third cousin once removed. She a great x 3 granddaughter of King Edward III of England.

Immediately after their marriage Arthur Prince of Wales and Catherine of Aragon resided at Tickenhill Manor, Bewdley [Map] for a month. Thereafter they travelled to Ludlow, Shropshire [Map].

On 2nd April 1502 Prince Arthur Tudor [aged 15] died at Ludlow Castle [Map]. Earl Chester extinct. The cause of death unknown other than being reported as "a malign vapour which proceeded from the air". [his sister-in-law] Catherine of Aragon [aged 16] had recovered.

On 10th March 1503 [his son] Ferdinand I Holy Roman Emperor was born to Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 24] and [his wife] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile [aged 24] at Alcalá de Henares. He a great x 4 grandson of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.88%. He married before 9th July 1526 his half second cousin once removed Anne Jagiellon and had issue.

On 26th November 1504 [his mother-in-law] Isabella Queen Castile [aged 53] died. Her daughter [his wife] Joanna [aged 25] succeeded Queen Castile. Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 26] by marriage King Castile.

On 15th September 1505 [his daughter] Mary Queen Hungary was born to Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 27] and [his wife] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile [aged 26]. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.88%.

Around 1506 Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 27] was appointed 257th Knight of the Garter by King Henry VII of England and Ireland [aged 48].

Wriothesley's Chronicle [1508-1562]. 1506. This yeare, about the latter ende of Januarye, the Kinge of Castell [aged 27] and his wife [aged 27]c were driven into Englande,d and had here great cheare. The King was made Knight of the Garter at Windsore [Map].e

Around February 1506 Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 27] was blown off course whilst travelling to Castile to claim his inheritance. He landed in England where he became the guest of King Henry VII of England and Ireland [aged 49] who negociated the Malus Intercursus Treaty as part of the conditions of his release. The Treaty include favourable commercial terms by removing all duties on English exports, and the marriage of King Henry VII of England and Ireland with Philip's sister Margaret of Austria Princess Asturias [aged 26] (which didn't take place). Most importantly it secured the return of Edmund Pole 3rd Duke of Suffolk [aged 35] who was Philip's prisoner with the condition that he, Edmund, not be executed by King Henryu VII. Edmund Pole was immediately imprisoned in the Tower of London [Map] and executed seven years later by King Henry VIII in line with an instruction in King Henry VII's will; an act which attracted the criticism of Montaigne in Chapter 7 of his Essays

On 25th September 1506 Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile [aged 28] died.

On 14th January 1507 [his daughter] Catherine of Austria Queen Consort Portugal was born to Philip "Handsome Fair" King Castile and [his former wife] Joanna "The Mad" Trastámara Queen Castile [aged 28]. She a great x 4 granddaughter of King Edward III of England. Coefficient of inbreeding 2.88%. She married 10th February 1525 her first cousin John III King Portugal, son of Manuel "Fortunate" I King Portugal and Maria Trastámara Queen Consort Portugal, and had issue.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

The full ceremonial of this is preserved in the College of Arms, I. 14, ff. 111–114; and see a letter of the lord treasurer to the bishop of London respecting preparations for the solemnity in Strype, Memorials, iii. 220. The deceased was [his former wife] Jane, the grandmother of [his grandson] king Philip [aged 28], and the aunt of [his granddaughter-in-law] queen Mary [aged 39], being the elder sister of [his former sister-in-law] queen Katharine. She was the eldest daughter of [his former father-in-law] Ferdinand the Catholic by [his former mother-in-law] Isabel queen of Castille; and having married Philip of Austria, they succeeded to the kingdom of Castille on the death of her mother in 1504. On the death of her father in 1516, her husband having previously died in 1506, she was from insanity unfit to reign, and her son Charles [aged 55] (afterwards emperor) was acknowledged sovereign of all Spain.
