On 28th November 1722 [his father] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis [aged 22] and [his mother] Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis were married.

On 31st December 1738 Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis was born to Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis [aged 38] and Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis at Grosvenor Square, Belgravia.

In 1753 [his father] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis [aged 52] was created 1st Earl Cornwallis. [his mother] Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis by marriage Countess Cornwallis.

On 23rd June 1762 [his father] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis [aged 62] died. His succeeded son Charles [aged 23] succeeded 2nd Earl Cornwallis, 6th Baron Cornwallis.

On 14th July 1768 Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis [aged 29] and Jemima Tullekin Jones Countess Cornwallis were married. She by marriage Countess Cornwallis. He the son of Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis and Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis.

On 28th June 1769 [his daughter] Mary Cornwallis was born to Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis [aged 30] and [his wife] Jemima Tullekin Jones Countess Cornwallis.

On 30th April 1771 [his brother] James Cornwallis 4th Earl Cornwallis [aged 28] and [his sister-in-law] Catherine Mann were married. He the son of [his father] Charles Cornwallis 1st Earl Cornwallis and [his mother] Elizabeth Townshend Countess Cornwallis.

On 19th October 1774 [his son] Charles Cornwallis 2nd Marquess Cornwallis was born to Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis [aged 35] and [his wife] Jemima Tullekin Jones Countess Cornwallis. He married 17th April 1795 Louisa Gordon Marchioness Cornwallis, daughter of Alexander Gordon 4th Duke Gordon and Jane Maxwell Duchess Gordon, and had issue.

On 14th April 1779 [his wife] Jemima Tullekin Jones Countess Cornwallis died.

1781 Battle of Yorktown

Between 28th September 1781 and 19th October 1781 the 1781 Battle of Yorktown was fought was a decisive victory by a combined force of the American Continental Army troops led by General George Washington [aged 49] and Gilbert du Motier, Marquis de Lafayette, and French Army troops led by Comte de Rochambeau over British Army troops commanded by British peer and Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis [aged 42].

Lieutenant General Charles Cornwallis and Charles Gould aka Morgan 2nd Baronet [aged 21] were captured.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

She the daughter of Alexander Gordon 4th Duke Gordon [aged 51] and Jane Maxwell Duchess Gordon [aged 47]. He the son of Charles Cornwallis 1st Marquess Cornwallis [aged 56] and Jemima Tullekin Jones Countess Cornwallis.

Treaty of Amiens

On 25th March 1802 the United Kingdom and the French Repulic signed the Treaty of Amiens bringing to an end the War of the Second Coalition. The peace laster for fifteen months only.
