The Deeds of King Henry V, or in Latin Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.

Battle of Lewes

On 14th May 1264 the army of Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester (age 56) including [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 20), Henry Hastings (age 29) and Nicholas Segrave 1st Baron Segrave (age 26) defeated the army of King Henry III of England (age 56) during the Battle of Lewes at Lewes [Map].

King Henry III of England, his son, the future, [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 24), Humphrey Bohun 2nd Earl Hereford 1st Earl Essex (age 60), Richard of Cornwall 1st Earl Cornwall (age 55), John "Red" Comyn 1st Lord Baddenoch (age 44), Philip Marmion 5th Baron Marmion (age 30) and John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield (age 32) were captured. John Warenne 6th Earl of Surrey (age 33), John Balliol (age 56), Robert Bruce 5th Lord Annandale (age 49), Roger Leybourne (age 49) and William de Valence 1st Earl Pembroke fought for the King. Guy Lusignan was killed. Fulk IV Fitzwarin (age 44) drowned. Bishop Walter de Cantelupe (age 73) was present and blessed the Montfort army before the battle.

Battle of Evesham

On 4th August 1265 the army loyal to King Henry III of England (age 57), led by his son the future [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 26), supported by [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 21), Warin Basingburne and John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield (age 33) defeated the rebel army of Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester (age 57) at the Battle of Evesham.

Roger Leybourne (age 50) fought and reputedly saved the King's life.

Adam Mohaut rescued the King.

Alan de Plugenet of Kilpec fought for the King.

Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester was killed. Earl of Leicester, Earl Chester forfeit. His son Henry Montfort (age 26) was also killed.

Hugh Despencer (age 41) was killed by Roger Mortimer 1st Baron Mortimer of Wigmore (age 34). Baron Despencer extinct. It may not have been created as a hereditary barony.

Simon Beauchamp (age 31), Ralph Basset (age 50), William Devereux (age 46), Hugh Troyes, Richard Trussel, Peter Montfort (age 60), William Mandeville, William Crepping, William Birmingham, Guy Balliol and Thomas Astley (age 50) were killed. Henry Hastings (age 30), Humphrey Bohun (age 44), Nicholas Segrave 1st Baron Segrave (age 27), John Vesci, John Fitzjohn and Guy Montfort Count Nola (age 21) were captured.

John Vesci was wounded and taken prisoner.

Battle of Llandeilo Fawr

On 17th June 1282 the army of [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 38) were ambushed by the Welsh at Llandeilo.

William "The Younger" Valence was killed.

Much of Gilbert Clare's army of 1600 men was destroyed.

On 2nd May 1290 [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford (age 46) and [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 18) were married at Clerkenwell [Map]. She by marriage Countess Gloucester, Countess Hertford. The difference in their ages was 28 years. She the daughter of [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 50) and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England (age 49). In January 1297 Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) and [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 24) were married in secret greatly offending her father [her grandfather] King Edward I of England (age 57) who had been planning to marry her to Amadeus V "Great" Savoy (age 47) in March. Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford was imprisoned at Bristol Castle, Gloucestershire [Map]; he was released in August 1297. She the daughter of King Edward I of England and [her grandmother] Eleanor of Castile Queen Consort England.

In August 1297 Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 27) was created 1st Earl Gloucester, 1st Earl Hertford. There is some uncertainty as to whether these creations existed, or were created for life only, since they do appear to have been inherited, or whether there is confusion around his having been married to [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 25), the widow of the seventh Earl of the first creation [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford.

After 1302 [her half-sister] Joan Clare Countess Fife (deceased) died.

After 14th July 1306 [her brother-in-law] Hugh "Younger" Despencer 1st Baron Despencer (age 20) and [her sister] Eleanor Clare Baroness Zouche Mortimer (age 13) were married. She the daughter of [her father] Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford and [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 34). He the son of Hugh "Elder" Despencer 1st Earl Winchester (age 45) and Isabella Beauchamp. They were third cousin once removed. He a great x 5 grandson of King Henry I "Beauclerc" England. On 23rd April 1307 [her mother] Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford (age 35) died at Clare, Suffolk [Map].

Return of Piers Gaveston

On 6th August 1307 [her future husband] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 23) was created 1st Earl Cornwall by [her uncle] King Edward II of England (age 23); Earl Cornwall usually reserved for the heir. The earldom gave Gaveston substantial landholdings over great parts of England, to the value of £4,000 a year. These possessions consisted of most of Cornwall, as well as parts of Devonshire in the south-west, land in Berkshire and Oxfordshire centred on the honour of Wallingford, most of the eastern part of Lincolnshire, and the honour of Knaresborough in Yorkshire, with the territories that belonged to it.

Marriage of Piers Gaveston and Margaret de Clare

On 2nd November 1307 Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 23) and Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester were married. Arranged by King Edward II of England (age 23). Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester grand-daughter of Edward I through his daughter Joan and, as such, significantly higher than Gaveston in the nobility. She the daughter of Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford and Joan of Acre Countess Gloucester and Hertford.

Life of Edward II by a Monk of Malmesbury. [2nd November 1307] So much so that, in order to strengthen Peter's faction and surround him with loyal friends, the lord king gave him in marriage the daughter of his sister, who was herself the daughter of the late Gilbert, Earl of Gloucester. Truly, this marriage alliance greatly advanced his cause; for it powerfully increased his favour among friends and helped restrain the hatred of the barons.

... et dedit sibi filiam sororis suse, videlicet filiam comitis Gloucestriæ, in uxorem; et ipsius Petri consilio regebatur. spretis consiliis aliorum nobilium, et eorum precipue quorum consilio pater suus pre ceteris utebatur.

After 2nd December 1307 [her husband] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 23) was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland.

Close Rolls Edward II 1307-1313. 16th January 1310 [her uncle] King Edward II of England (age 25). The Grove, Watford [Map]. To the Treasurer and the Barons of the Exchequer. Order to discharge the Abbot of Hayles of £100yearly, the rent of the manor of Lychelad [Map], as the King granted it to [her husband] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 26) and Margaret his wife.

To the same. Order to discharge the men of Wallingford, Oxfordshire [Map] of the ferm of that town from August 5 last, to Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall and Margaret his wife.

Exile of Piers Gaveston

In April 1311 Parliament exiled [her husband] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 27). Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall was appointed Lord Lieutenant of Ireland by [her uncle] King Edward II of England (age 26) who immediately started to plot for his return.

Capture, Trial and Execution of Piers Gaveston

On 19th June 1312 [her husband] Piers Gaveston 1st Earl Cornwall (age 28) was taken to Blacklow Hill, Warwickshire [Map] where he was beheaded. Earl Cornwall extinct. Blacklow Hill, Warwickshire [Map] being outside of the lands of Guy Beauchamp 10th Earl of Warwick (age 40). Gaveston's body was left where it lay eventually being recovered by Dominican friars who took it to King's Langley Priory, Hertfordshire [Map].

Around 1318 [her daughter] Margaret Audley Countess Stafford was born to [her husband] Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 27) and Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester. She a great granddaughter of King Edward I of England. She married before 6th July 1336 her fifth cousin Ralph Stafford 1st Earl Stafford, son of Edmund Stafford 1st Baron Stafford and Margaret Basset, and had issue.

On 23rd July 1321 Thomas Berkeley 6th and 1st Baron Berkeley (age 76) died at St Augustine's Abbey, Bristol [Map]. His son [her brother-in-law] Maurice (age 50) succeeded 7th Baron Berkeley Feudal, 2nd Baron Berkeley. Battle of Boroughbridge

On 16th March 1322 the rebel army led by Thomas Plantagenet 2nd Earl of Leicester, 2nd Earl Lancaster, Earl of Salisbury and Lincoln (age 44) attempted to cross the bridge over the River Ure (between Ripon and York) at Boroughbridge Bridge [Map]. Their path was blocked by forces loyal to the King led by Andrew Harclay 1st Earl Carlisle (age 52). Bartholomew Badlesmere 1st Baron Badlesmere (age 46), Roger Mortimer 1st Earl March (age 34), John Botetort 1st Baron Botetort (age 57) and John Maltravers 1st Baron Maltravers (age 32) fought for the rebels. Roger Clifford 2nd Baron Clifford (age 22), Nicholas Longford (age 37), Thomas Plantagenet 2nd Earl of Leicester, 2nd Earl Lancaster, Earl of Salisbury and Lincoln, John Mowbray 2nd Baron Mowbray (age 35) were captured.

Warin Lisle (age 51) was hanged after the battle at Pontefract [Map].

Following the battle [her husband] Hugh Audley 1st Earl Gloucester (age 31) and his wife Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester were both imprisoned. He in Nottingham Castle [Map] and she in Sempringham Priory [Map].

John Clinton 2nd Baron Clinton (age 22), Ralph Greystoke 1st Baron Greystoke (age 22), William Latimer 2nd Baron Latimer of Corby (age 46), Robert Lisle 1st Baron Lisle (age 34), Domhnall Mar II Earl of Mar (age 29) and Peter Saltmarsh (age 42) fought for the King.

Adam Everingham 1st Baron Everingham of Laxton (age 43) was captured.

Humphrey Bohun 4th Earl Hereford 3rd Earl Essex (age 46) was killed. His son John (age 15) succeeded 5th Earl Hereford, 4th Earl Essex.

Piers Grandison 2nd Baron Grandison (age 31) fough for the rebels, and was captured.

[her father-in-law] Hugh Audley 1st Baron Audley of Stratton Audley (age 55) surrendered before the battle and was imprisoned in Wallingford Castle [Map] for the rest of his life

John Giffard 2nd Baron Giffard Brimpsfield (age 34) was captured.

On 5th April 1325 Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford (age 55) died. Earl Gloucester, Earl Hertford extinct. His son [her half-brother] Thomas (age 23) succeeded 2nd Baron Monthermer.

On 11th December 1326 Margaret Clare Countess Gloucester was released from her imprisonment at Sempringham Priory [Map].

In 1333 [her half-sister] Isabella Clare Baroness Berkeley (age 70) died.

The Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough, a canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: "In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed."
