On 14th May 1264 the army of Simon de Montfort 6th Earl of Leicester 1st Earl Chester [aged 56] including Gilbert "Red Earl" Clare 7th Earl Gloucester 6th Earl Hertford [aged 20], [his father] Henry Hastings [aged 29] and Nicholas Segrave 1st Baron Segrave [aged 26] defeated the army of King Henry III of England [aged 56] during the Battle of Lewes at Lewes [Map].

King Henry III of England, his son, the future, King Edward I of England [aged 24], Humphrey Bohun 2nd Earl Hereford 1st Earl Essex [aged 60], Richard of Cornwall 1st Earl Cornwall [aged 55], John "Red" Comyn 1st Lord Baddenoch [aged 44], Philip Marmion 5th Baron Marmion [aged 30] and John Giffard 1st Baron Giffard Brimpsfield [aged 32] were captured. John Warenne 6th Earl of Surrey [aged 33], John Balliol [aged 56], Robert Bruce 5th Lord Annandale [aged 49], Roger Leybourne [aged 49] and [his future father-in-law] William de Valence 1st Earl Pembroke fought for the King. Guy Lusignan was killed. Fulk IV Fitzwarin [aged 44] drowned. Bishop Walter de Cantelupe [aged 73] was present and blessed the Montfort army before the battle.

Around 1269 [his father] Henry Hastings [aged 34] died.

In 1271 [his mother] Joan Cantilupe died.

In 1273 John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 10] succeeded 13th Baron Abergavenny Feudal Creation.

On 18th October 1273 [his uncle] George Cantilupe 12th Baron Abergavenny [aged 21] died. His nephew John [aged 11] succeeded 13th Baron Abergavenny Feudal Creation.

Before 1282 John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 19] and Isabel Valence Baroness Bergavenny Baroness Hastings were married. In 1282 [his son] William Hastings was born to John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 19] and [his wife] Isabel Valence Baroness Bergavenny Baroness Hastings. He married Eleanor Fitzmartin.

On 29th September 1286 [his son] John Hastings 2nd Baron Hastings 14th Baron Abergavenny was born to John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 24] and [his wife] Isabel Valence Baroness Bergavenny Baroness Hastings at Abergavenny, Monmouthshire [Map]. He married before 20th March 1319 Juliana Leybourne Countess Huntingdon and had issue.

Memoires of Jacques du Clercq

This is a translation of the 'Memoires of Jacques du Clercq', published in 1823 in two volumes, edited by Frederic, Baron de Reissenberg. In his introduction Reissenberg writes: 'Jacques du Clercq tells us that he was born in 1424, and that he was a licentiate in law and a counsellor to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy, in the castellany of Douai, Lille, and Orchies. It appears that he established his residence at Arras. In 1446, he married the daughter of Baldwin de la Lacherie, a gentleman who lived in Lille. We read in the fifth book of his Memoirs that his father, also named Jacques du Clercq, had married a lady of the Le Camelin family, from Compiègne. His ancestors, always attached to the counts of Flanders, had constantly served them, whether in their councils or in their armies.' The Memoires cover a period of nineteen years beginning in in 1448, ending in in 1467. It appears that the author had intended to extend the Memoirs beyond that date; no doubt illness or death prevented him from carrying out this plan. As Reissenberg writes the 'merit of this work lies in the simplicity of its narrative, in its tone of good faith, and in a certain air of frankness which naturally wins the reader’s confidence.' Du Clercq ranges from events of national and international importance, including events of the Wars of the Roses in England, to simple, everyday local events such as marriages, robberies, murders, trials and deaths, including that of his own father in Book 5; one of his last entries.

She married before 1317 her fourth cousin Roger Grey 1st Baron Grey Ruthyn, son of John Grey 2nd Baron Grey of Wilton and Maud Basset Baroness Grey Wilton, and had issue.

On 24th June 1295 King Edward I of England [aged 56] created new baronies through writs for summons to his 36th Parliament

In 1310 [his son] Hugh Hastings was born to John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 47] and [his wife] Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny at Sutton Scotney, Hampshire [Map]. He married his fifth cousin Margery Foliot and had issue.

In 1311 [his son] William Hastings [aged 29] died.

Around 1313 Ralph Monthermer 1st Earl of Gloucester and Hertford [aged 43] and [his wife] Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny were married. She the daughter of [his father-in-law] Hugh "Elder" Despencer 1st Earl Winchester [aged 51] and Isabella Beauchamp.

On 28th February 1313 John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings [aged 50] died. His son John [aged 26] succeeded 2nd Baron Hastings, 14th Baron Abergavenny Feudal Creation.

In 1334 [his former wife] Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny died.

On 30th December 1389 John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke [aged 17] was killed in a tournament during the Christmas Court at Woodstock Palace, Oxfordshire [Map]. Earl Pembroke and Baron Manny, Baron Abergavenny Feudal Creation extinct. He was struck in the groin by the lance of Sir John Des.

His claim was contested by [his great grandson] Reginald Grey 3rd Baron Grey Ruthyn [aged 27] who was the son of Elizabeth Hastings Baroness Grey Ruthyn daughter of John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings his case being that he was of the full blood whereas John Hastings 6th Baron Hastings was of the half-blood ie Reginald Grey 3rd Baron Grey Ruthyn, like John Hastings 3rd Earl Pembroke, was descended from John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings and Isabel Valence Baroness Bergavenny Baroness Hastings, whereas John Hastings 6th Baron Hastings was descended from John Hastings 13th Baron Abergavenny 1st Baron Hastings and Isabel Despencer Baroness Hastings and Bergavenny.

Deeds of King Henry V

Henrici Quinti, Angliæ Regis, Gesta, is a first-hand account of the Agincourt Campaign, and subsequent events to his death in 1422. The author of the first part was a Chaplain in King Henry's retinue who was present from King Henry's departure at Southampton in 1415, at the siege of Harfleur, the battle of Agincourt, and the celebrations on King Henry's return to London. The second part, by another writer, relates the events that took place including the negotiations at Troye, Henry's marriage and his death in 1422.
