The True Chronicles of Jean le Bel Volume 2 Chapters 61-109 1342-1361

The Chronicle of Jean le Bel, Volume 2 continues one of the most important fourteenth-century accounts of the early Hundred Years’ War. Written by the Liège chronicler Jean le Bel, this vivid narrative follows the fortunes of Edward III, Jean II of France, the Black Prince, the great nobles of France and England, and the soldiers, captains and companies who shaped the conflict. This volume covers some of the most dramatic events of the period, including the battles of Crécy and Poitiers, the siege and capture of Calais, the captivity of King John, the rise of the Jacquerie, the turmoil in Paris under Étienne Marcel and Charles of Navarre, the devastation caused by the free companies, Edward III’s great campaign of 1359–1360, and the negotiations leading to the Treaty of Brétigny. Jean le Bel’s chronicle is especially valuable for its lively detail, its interest in chivalry, warfare, politics and reputation, and its influence on later chroniclers, most famously Froissart. This English translation presents the text in clear, readable British English while preserving the force and character of the original narrative. The translation includes extensive notes to help the reader better understand Jean le Bel's text. Volume 2 also includes translated appendices drawn from royal and administrative records, many from the English Record Office, which illuminate Edward III’s campaigns in Brittany, the siege and occupation of Calais, naval preparations, military finance, appointments, safe conducts and related affairs.

In 1070 Waltheof Northumbria 1st Earl of Northampton 1st Earl Huntingdon and [her mother] Judith Flanders Countess Huntingdon [aged 16] were married. She by marriage Earldorman Northumbria, Countess Huntingdon. She, Judith, a niece of King William "Conqueror" I of England [aged 42]. She the daughter of [her grandfather] Lambert Flanders II Count Lens and [her grandmother] Adelaide Normandy Countess Troyes and Meaux Champagne Aumale Ponthieu [aged 40]. He the son of Siward "Stout" Earl of Northumbria and Aelfflaed Northumbria.

After 1086 [her mother] Judith Flanders Countess Huntingdon [deceased] died.

Around 1095 [her son] Walteof Senlis was born to [her husband] Simon Senlis 1st Earl of Northampton, Earl of Huntingdon and Maud Queen Consort Scotland [aged 21].

Around 1098 [her son] Simon Senlis 4th Earl Huntingdon 4th Earl of Northampton was born to [her husband] Simon Senlis 1st Earl of Northampton, Earl of Huntingdon and Maud Queen Consort Scotland [aged 24]. He married in or before 1138 his half fifth cousin once removed Isabel Beaumont Countess Huntingdon and Northampton, daughter of Robert Beaumont 2nd Earl of Leicester and Amice Gael Countess Leicester, and had issue.

Around 1114 [her son-in-law] Robert de Clare [aged 50] and Maud Senlis were married. She the daughter of Simon Senlis 1st Earl of Northampton, Earl of Huntingdon and Maud Queen Consort Scotland [aged 40]. They were half third cousin twice removed.

In 1116 [her sister-in-law] Mary Dunkeld Countess Boulogne [aged 34] died.

On 23rd April 1124 King Alexander I of Scotland [aged 46] died. His brother David [aged 40] succeeded I King Scotland. Maud Queen Consort Scotland [aged 50] by marriage Queen Consort Scotland.

In 1131 Maud Queen Consort Scotland [aged 57] died. Her son Henry [aged 17] succeeded 3rd Earl Huntingdon, 3rd Earl of Northampton. Ada Warenne Countess Huntingdon and Northumbria [aged 11] by marriage Countess Huntingdon.

On 24th May 1153 King David I of Scotland [aged 69] died at Carlisle, Cumberland [Map]. His grandson Malcolm [aged 12] succeeded King Scotland.

Maud Senlis was born to Simon Senlis 1st Earl of Northampton, Earl of Huntingdon and Maud Queen Consort Scotland. She married 1. Saer Quincy and had issue 2. in or before 1086 William Brito de Albini and had issue 3. 1114 her half third cousin twice removed Robert de Clare and had issue.

St Andrew's Priory, Northampton [Map] was a Cluniac Priory founded around 1093 by Simon Senlis 1st Earl of Northampton, Earl of Huntingdon and his wife Maud Queen Consort Scotland. A sister house Delapré Abbey was founded for nuns at the same time.
