Chronicle of Walter of Guisborough
A canon regular of the Augustinian Guisborough Priory, Yorkshire, formerly known as The Chronicle of Walter of Hemingburgh, describes the period from 1066 to 1346. Before 1274 the Chronicle is based on other works. Thereafter, the Chronicle is original, and a remarkable source for the events of the time. This book provides a translation of the Chronicle from that date. The Latin source for our translation is the 1849 work edited by Hans Claude Hamilton. Hamilton, in his preface, says: 'In the present work we behold perhaps one of the finest samples of our early chronicles, both as regards the value of the events recorded, and the correctness with which they are detailed; Nor will the pleasing style of composition be lightly passed over by those capable of seeing reflected from it the tokens of a vigorous and cultivated mind, and a favourable specimen of the learning and taste of the age in which it was framed.'

When [her uncle] Thomas of Woodstock 1st Duke of Gloucester [aged 32] arrived with further Lord Appellant's men the King's men were encircled. The King's men attempted to force the crossing of the bridge at which time the only casualties occurred including Thomas Molyneux [aged 49] who was killed by Thomas Mortimer [aged 37]. Around 800 men drowned in the marshes whilst trying to escape. Robert de Vere 1st Duke Ireland narrowly escaped to France.
Westminster Chronicle. Also, on the 17th day of October, papal bulls were fixed to the doors of the church of St Paul, declaring how the divorce made in the Roman court by Master John Ripon, clerk, between [her former husband] Robert de Vere [aged 27], Duke of Ireland, and the daughter [aged 22] [Philippa] of [her father] Lord Enguerrand de Coucy [aged 49], and [her mother] Isabel, the king’s kinswoman, was invalid and null. Also, on the 2nd day of November, Boniface IX was elected pope. At that time the lord king carried out that very severe inquiry against the usurpers of his crown, called trailbaston, in Essex, Kent, and elsewhere; as a result, very many were indicted and some were committed to bonds. For those men of the king’s bench went to various counties, always inquiring, as they said, for the profit and advantage of the lord king. Yet in some counties they brought in no profit, because the men of those counties refused to burden their neighbours. The ministers of the aforesaid bench, for that reason, called them unfaithful to the lord king; but when the coming of the Duke of Lancaster was heard of, they immediately ceased from such unusual proceedings.
