William of Worcester's Chronicle of England

William of Worcester, born around 1415, and died around 1482 was secretary to John Fastolf, the renowned soldier of the Hundred Years War, during which time he collected documents, letters, and wrote a record of events. Following their return to England in 1440 William was witness to major events. Twice in his chronicle he uses the first person: 1. when writing about the murder of Thomas, 7th Baron Scales, in 1460, he writes '… and I saw him lying naked in the cemetery near the porch of the church of St. Mary Overie in Southwark …' and 2. describing King Edward IV's entry into London in 1461 he writes '… proclaimed that all the people themselves were to recognize and acknowledge Edward as king. I was present and heard this, and immediately went down with them into the city'. William’s Chronicle is rich in detail. It is the source of much information about the Wars of the Roses, including the term 'Diabolical Marriage' to describe the marriage of Queen Elizabeth Woodville’s brother John’s marriage to Katherine, Dowager Duchess of Norfolk, he aged twenty, she sixty-five or more, and the story about a paper crown being placed in mockery on the severed head of Richard, 3rd Duke of York.

In February 1695 Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 19] and Arabella Cavendish [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of Henry Cavendish 2nd Duke Newcastle upon Tyne and Frances Pierrepont Duchess Newcastle upon Tyne [aged 64]. He the son of [his grandfather] Robert Spencer 2nd Earl of Sunderland [aged 53] and [his grandmother] Anne Digby Countess Sunderland [aged 49].

Before 2nd December 1700 Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 25] and [his mother] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland [aged 17] were married. She the daughter of [his grandfather] John Churchill 1st Duke of Marlborough [aged 50] and [his grandmother] Sarah Jennings Duchess of Marlborough [aged 40]. He the son of Robert Spencer 2nd Earl of Sunderland [aged 59] and Anne Digby Countess Sunderland [aged 54].

On 15th April 1716 [his mother] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland [aged 33] died.

In 1717 Henry Howard 4th Earl Carlisle [aged 22] and [his half-sister] Frances Spencer Countess Carlisle [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 41] and Arabella Cavendish. He the son of Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 48] and Anne Capell Countess Carlisle [aged 43]. They were third cousin once removed.

Before 1718 Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 42] and [his step-mother] Judith Tichborne Countess Sunderland [aged 32] were married. She by marriage Countess of Sunderland. He the son of [his grandfather] Robert Spencer 2nd Earl of Sunderland and [his grandmother] Anne Digby Countess Sunderland.

In 1720 [his brother-in-law] William Bateman 1st Viscount Culmore [aged 25] and [his sister] Anne Spencer Viscountess Culmore [aged 18] were married. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 44] and [his mother] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland.

On 19th April 1722 Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland [aged 46] died. His son Robert [aged 20] succeeded 4th Earl of Sunderland, 6th Baron Spencer Wormleighton.

In 1725 [his brother-in-law] William Bateman 1st Viscount Culmore [aged 30] was created 1st Viscount Culmore, 1st Baron Culmore in Londonderry. [his sister] Anne Spencer Viscountess Culmore [aged 23] by marriage Viscountess Culmore.

On 27th February 1729 [his brother] Robert Spencer 4th Earl of Sunderland [aged 27] died. His brother Charles [aged 22] succeeded 5th Earl of Sunderland, 7th Baron Spencer Wormleighton.

On 11th October 1731 John Russell 4th Duke Bedford [aged 21] and [his sister] Diana Spencer Duchess Bedford [aged 21] were married. She the daughter of [his father] Charles Spencer 3rd Earl of Sunderland and [his mother] Anne Churchill Countess Sunderland. He the son of Wriothesley Russell 2nd Duke Bedford and Elizabeth Howland Duchess Bedford. They were third cousins.

On 24th March 1734 [his daughter] Diana Spencer Viscountess St John and Bolingbroke was born to Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 27] and [his wife] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 21]. She married 1. 8th September 1757 Frederick St John 3rd Viscount St John 2nd Viscount Bolingbroke, son of John St John 2nd Viscount St John and Anne Furnese, and had issue 2. 12th March 1768 Topham Beauclerk and had issue.

On 27th September 1735 [his sister] Diana Spencer Duchess Bedford [aged 25] died at Southampton House.

On 1st May 1738 Charles Howard 3rd Earl Carlisle [aged 69] died at Bath, Somerset [Map]. He was buried at Castle Howard Mausoleum. His son Henry [aged 43] succeeded 4th Earl Carlisle. [his half-sister] Frances Spencer Countess Carlisle [aged 42] by marriage Countess Carlisle.

On 31st March 1740 Charles Spencer was born to Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 33] and [his wife] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 27]. He married 2nd October 1762 Mary Beauclerk, daughter of Vere Beauclerk 1st Baron de Vere and Mary Chambers Baroness Spencer, and had issue.

In 1741 King George II of Great Britain and Ireland [aged 57] created new Garter Knights as follows:

554th Frederick Hesse-Kassel [aged 20]. Probably as a consequence of his having married the daughter of King George II.

555th Charles Beauclerk 2nd Duke St Albans [aged 44],

556th Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 34],

557th Evelyn Pierrepont 2nd Duke Kingston upon Hull [aged 30],

On 8th May 1747 [his son] Robert Spencer was born to Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 40] and [his wife] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 34].

In 1755 Charles Spencer 3rd Duke of Marlborough [aged 48] was appointed Lord Privy Seal.

On 7th October 1761 [his former wife] Elizabeth Trevor Duchess of Marlborough [aged 48] died.
