Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall
The Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall (Chronicon Anglicanum) is an indispensable medieval history that brings to life centuries of English and European affairs through the eyes of a learned Cistercian monk. Ralph of Coggeshall, abbot of the Abbey of Coggeshall in Essex in the early 13th century, continued and expanded his community’s chronicle, documenting events from the Norman Conquest of 1066 into the tumultuous reign of King Henry III. Blending eyewitness testimony, careful compilation, and the monastic commitment to record-keeping, this chronicle offers a rare narrative of political intrigue, royal power struggles, and social upheaval in England and beyond. Ralph’s work captures the reigns of pivotal figures such as Richard I and King John, providing invaluable insights into their characters, decisions, and the forces that shaped medieval rule. More than a simple annal, Chronicon Anglicanum conveys the texture of medieval life and governance, making it a rich source for scholars and readers fascinated by English history, monastic authorship, and the shaping of the medieval world.

Life of Charles VI by a Monk of St Denis. Returning now to the hostile raids of the English, which until now have been passed over in silence because of what has already been said, it seems fitting that our account should begin with the departure of the dukes from the duchy of Aquitaine. For after this the English, serving under the banners of Lord Thomas1, the son of the king of England, became bolder in doing harm when they heard of their departure. From the month of September until now they had ridden out from Aquitaine through Touraine and from Marmoutier through Anjou2, carrying out hostile incursions, violently driving off flocks and herds from every place and plundering the peasants of all their goods; nor did they cease to burn the suburbs until they had reached Brittany. They were indeed not unaware that the barons3 were working vigorously to bring the duke of Brittany [aged 41]4 into reconciliation with the king of France. But since they knew that he had not yet accepted the treaties of peace nor dissolved the longstanding bond of friendship recently contracted with them, they decided to spend the harshness of the winter in the duchy, not as enemies but as friendly allies. Although the barons had long refused this, at last, overcome by the duke's earnest pleas, they allowed it, though not without difficulty, on the condition that the English should be completely excluded from entering fortresses and towns. Instead, moving openly through the countryside and the suburbs, they were permitted to engage in trade according to the common law of commerce, and necessary goods were to be sold to them in fair measure and at a just price.

Although the betrothal had been agreed upon and confirmed between the parents of both after the year had already passed, since they were related in the third degree of consanguinity1 on the side of the duke's wife, Pope Benedict had delayed granting a dispensation on this matter. Moreover, the king did not grant any portion from the kingdom to the daughter, but promised three hundred thousand crowns of gold for the marriage, to be paid at certain terms after both reached marriageable age.
In principio augusti, in signum matrimonii consummendi inter filiam regis Francie Johannam, adhuc triennem, Johannemque filium ducis Britanie, adolescentem quinquennem, Parisius, in regis, regine, ducis Britanie et dominorum Francie presencia, nupciarum solemne celebratum est prandium. Quamvis anno jam transacto inter parentes amborum concordata et confirmata fuissent sponsalia, quia tamen in tercio gradu consanguinitatis ex parte uxoris ducis se mutuo attinebant, super hoc summus pontifex Benedictus distulerat dispensare. Eidem autem filie rex de regno nullam concessit porcionem, sed trecenta milia scuta auri promisit propter nupcias, certis terminis persolvenda, postquam annos nubiles uterque attigisset.
