The Chronicle of Geoffrey le Baker of Swinbroke. Baker was a secular clerk from Swinbroke, now Swinbrook, an Oxfordshire village two miles east of Burford. His Chronicle describes the events of the period 1303-1356: Gaveston, Bannockburn, Boroughbridge, the murder of King Edward II, the Scottish Wars, Sluys, Crécy, the Black Death, Winchelsea and Poitiers. To quote Herbert Bruce 'it possesses a vigorous and characteristic style, and its value for particular events between 1303 and 1356 has been recognised by its editor and by subsequent writers'. The book provides remarkable detail about the events it describes. Baker's text has been augmented with hundreds of notes, including extracts from other contemporary chronicles, such as the Annales Londonienses, Annales Paulini, Murimuth, Lanercost, Avesbury, Guisborough and Froissart to enrich the reader's understanding. The translation takes as its source the 'Chronicon Galfridi le Baker de Swynebroke' published in 1889, edited by Edward Maunde Thompson. Available at Amazon in eBook and Paperback.

On 3rd July 1449 [his father] King James II of Scotland (age 18) and [his mother] Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland (age 15) were married at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood. She the daughter of [his grandfather] Arnold Egmont Duke Guelders (age 38) and [his grandmother] Catherine La Marck (age 32). He the son of [his grandfather] King James I of Scotland and [his grandmother] Joan Beaufort Queen Consort Scotland. They were fourth cousin once removed. He a great x 2 grandson of King Edward III of England.

On 10th July 1451 King James III of Scotland was born to King James II of Scotland (age 20) and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland (age 17). He a great x 3 grandson of King Edward III of England.

In 1460 Robert Boyd 1st Lord Boyd (age 40) was one of the Regents of King James III of Scotland (age 8) during his minority.

1460 Siege of Roxburgh

On 3rd August 1460 [his father] King James II of Scotland (age 29) was killed accidentally whilst besieging Roxburgh Castle when a cannon exploded and he was hit by debris. He was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood. His son James (age 9) succeeded III King Scotland.

William Douglas 3rd Lord Drumlanrig (age 20) was present.

Chronicle of Gregory. 1462. And then my Lord of Warwycke (age 33) and his brother the Lord Montegewe (age 31) put them in devyr to rescewe [t]e said castelle of Norham, and soo they dyd, and put bothe King Harry and the Kyng of Schotys (age 10) to flyghte. And Quene Margarete whythe alle hir consayle, and Syr Perys de Brasey (age 52) whythe the Fraynysche men, fledde a-wey by water with iiij balynggarys; and they londyd at the Scluse [Map] in Flaundyrs, and lefte Kyng Harry that was be hynde hem, and alle her hors and her harneys, they were so hastyd by my lord of Warwycke, and his brother the lord Mountegewe, and by her feleschippe with them accompanyde. And at the departynge of Syr Perys de Brasyl and his feleschippe was on manly man that purposyd to mete with my lord of Warwycke, that was a taberette, for he stode a-pon an hylle with his tabyr and his pype, taberyng and pyping as merely as any man might, stondyng by him selfe, tylle my lord come unto him he wold not lesse his grownd; and there he be-come my lordys man; ande yet he is with him full good and to his lorde.

1462 Siege of Norham Castle

Around June 1462 a Scottish and Lancastrian force, including King James III of Scotland (age 10), his mother [his mother] Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland (age 28), King Henry VI of England and II of France (age 40) and his wife Margaret of Anjou Queen Consort England (age 32), laid siege to Norham Castle [Map]. They held Norham for eighteen days until a force led by Richard "Kingmaker" Neville Earl Warwick, 6th Earl Salisbury (age 33) and his brother John Neville 1st Marquess Montagu (age 31) advanced to Norham Castle [Map] at which time the Scottish and Lancastrian force fled in panic pursued by the Yorkist army. Margaret of Anjou Queen Consort England and her son Edward of Westminster Prince of Wales (age 8) escaped to Berwick on Tweed, Northumberland [Map] and then to the continent. King Henry VI of England and II of France remained in Scotland - he and his wife never saw each other again.

On 1st December 1463 [his mother] Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland (age 29) died at Roxburgh Castle, Roxburgh. She was buried at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood.

Before 26th April 1467 Thomas Boyd 1st Earl Arran and [his sister] Mary Stewart Countess Arran (age 13) were married. The marriage arranged by his father, Regent Robert Boyd 1st Lord Boyd (age 47). The King, her elder brother King James III of Scotland (age 15) consider the marriage a great insult. He, Thomas, was subsequently charged with treason and when failing to appear in response to a summons, their marriage was declared null and void, and she was married to James Hamilton 1st Lord Hamilton (age 52). She the daughter of [his father] King James II of Scotland and [his mother] Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland.

In July 1469 King James III of Scotland (age 17) and Margaret Oldenburg Queen Consort Scotland (age 13) were married at Holyrood Abbey, Holyrood. She by marriage Queen Consort Scotland. She the daughter of Christian I King Denmark (age 43) and Dorothea of Brandenburg (age 38). He the son of King James II of Scotland and Mary of Guelders Queen Consort Scotland.

On 17th March 1473 [his son] King James IV of Scotland was born to King James III of Scotland (age 21) and [his wife] Margaret Oldenburg Queen Consort Scotland (age 16) at Stirling Castle [Map].

In March 1476 [his son] Archbishop James Stewart 1st Duke Ross was born to King James III of Scotland (age 24) and [his wife] Margaret Oldenburg Queen Consort Scotland (age 19).

On 6th September 1478 [his brother-in-law] John King Denmark Norway and Sweden (age 23) and Christina Queen Consort Denmark Norway and Sweden (age 16) were married. He the son of [his father-in-law] Christian I King Denmark (age 52) and [his mother-in-law] Dorothea of Brandenburg (age 47).

On 21st May 1481 [his father-in-law] Christian I King Denmark (age 55) died. His son [his brother-in-law] John (age 26) succeeded King Denmark. Christina Queen Consort Denmark Norway and Sweden (age 19) by marriage Queen Consort Denmark.

In 1483 [his brother-in-law] John King Denmark Norway and Sweden (age 27) succeeded King Norway. Christina Queen Consort Denmark Norway and Sweden (age 21) by marriage Queen Consort Norway.

On 14th July 1486 [his wife] Margaret Oldenburg Queen Consort Scotland (age 30) died.

Battle of Sauchieburn

On 11th June 1488 King James III of Scotland (age 36) was killed in action or attempting to escape, at the Battle of Sauchieburn. His son [his son] James (age 15) succeeded IV King Scotland.

Alexander Stewart 3rd of Garlies (age 45) fought.

Alexander Cunningham 1st Earl Glencairn (age 62) was killed. His son Robert (age 37) succeeded 2nd Earl Glencairn.
