Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall

The Chronicle of Abbot Ralph of Coggeshall (Chronicon Anglicanum) is an indispensable medieval history that brings to life centuries of English and European affairs through the eyes of a learned Cistercian monk. Ralph of Coggeshall, abbot of the Abbey of Coggeshall in Essex in the early 13th century, continued and expanded his community’s chronicle, documenting events from the Norman Conquest of 1066 into the tumultuous reign of King Henry III. Blending eyewitness testimony, careful compilation, and the monastic commitment to record-keeping, this chronicle offers a rare narrative of political intrigue, royal power struggles, and social upheaval in England and beyond. Ralph’s work captures the reigns of pivotal figures such as Richard I and King John, providing invaluable insights into their characters, decisions, and the forces that shaped medieval rule. More than a simple annal, Chronicon Anglicanum conveys the texture of medieval life and governance, making it a rich source for scholars and readers fascinated by English history, monastic authorship, and the shaping of the medieval world.

In the same year, at the feast of Saint Andrew, the truce between the lords the Kings of France and England expired. It was afterwards prolonged until the following Easter, in the hope that peace might be restored. The citizens of Bordeaux and the other magnates of Gascony, not knowing of the prolongation of the truce, forcibly expelled all the men of the King of France from the city of Bordeaux and from the castles. Thus, in their regions, they did not observe the truce with the French. In the same year, on Thursday, the feast of Saint Valentine, the Counts of Savoy and Lincoln and the lord Otto de Grandson crossed into France to conclude peace finally between the Kings of France and England. In the same year, on the eighth day before the Ides [6th] of January, at Crondall near Odiham, a letter was issued by the archbishop to the Bishop of London, stating that he would visit the Bishop of London on the fourth court day immediately following the feast of Saint Valentine. When that day came, the lord archbishop entered the city and diocese on Tuesday, namely Shrove Tuesday.

Annales Paulini. In the year of our Lord 1316, the dominical letter was C, and it was a leap year. It was an extremely costly year, in which there was a very great shortage of all provisions. A quarter of wheat sold for almost the whole year at 30 shillings sterling, and often for more, while a bushel of salt sold for 5 shillings. As a result, there was a very great famine in that year, so that many poor people died from want and misery. In the same year, Lady Elizabeth [deceased], Countess of Hereford, sister of King Edward, died, and was buried at Walden on the tenth day before the Kalends of June [23rd May 1316].
